My dad was in the Phillipines at 17 years of age. Purple Heart and a Bronze Star but he didn't talk about it a lot either.

I think therein lies the failures of liberals. The misunderstands and confusion that makes them feel like they don't fit in or the system is somehow rigged against them. It has been my observations that liberals often can't identify normal human emotions. Like your example of mistaking loving protection for humility.... with total disregard for the root of the word. Except that a generation is not great. People can be great, but generalizations so large as to encompass the greatness of a generation tend to fail when examined closely. I'd argue that there have been other great periods and that there were people in those periods who did equally great things: people who brought civil rights into our country's consciousness in the 60's; soldiers in the 60's who fought despite being reviled by a significant portion of society. Let's not forget that it was the "greatest generation" and its government that ignored the Holocaust for so long and that unleashed nuclear horror upon the world. Terms like "the greatest generation" are great for front pages and Life magazine pictorials, but realism and objectivity are much more useful all the time.
