That goes for me, too, and includes hearing about the war from both of my grandfathers who fought on the front lines (D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as action in Italy), both of whom were also injured. Neither of them said a word about socialists, and neither of them was paranoid about their freedom or militant about their views. They were humble, and unlike what has been displayed here, the showed respect, even if their opinions were different than those around them.

i simply recommend the book, wartime by paul fussell if you are looking for a good read on the everyday and contemporaneous accounts of world war two.

Drinking only well water, I survived to make it home. After another shower (I'm a clean heathen, mind you and I like my 3/4 HP 2-wire, 220V Myers well pump...it's the Campagnolo of submersibles!) I walked out to find my wife cooking corn right out of our garden. Shockingly enough, I'm still alive hours later! Is there a goobermint agency I should call to report myself?
