  1. If you were running 1/2 marathons in 1:50, I would say that is good
for someone weighing 214 lbs and you are almost ready. But if you're
doing 2:50, that is just a fast walk pace. If that's the case, I
suggest you save the $50 or whatever and find another way to torture
    yourself for 6 hours.

    Hi All!

Well, I'm not sure if I'm going nuts, but, I'm about to sign up for my first
marathon... ever.. My question to you runners is... (am I nuts).. here is
kindof a brief outline of where I am now.

    - Started running a year ago (longer distances)...
    - Did two 1/2 marathons last year (wow, I now have such a huge respect for
that distance.. and when I finished, I though (hey, I might just be half way
if this was a marathon). - my time was 2hr 50min.
    - I'm a bit overwight 214lb. 5'10'
    - 37 years old
    - deskjob (so my only activity is running).

Anyhow, I'm thinking of signing up for this Septemer (earlybird discount is
closing, and I though, hey, just jump on it)... am I overdoing this? -
should I wait a couple years?

    Thanks everyone!

This is what I have all my runners do. If they can't get their bodyfat

    to 5% or less,
there's no sense in me wasting my time with them.
    ______

To function properly, our bodies need to store at least 5% fat for men
and 8% to 12% for women. Average body-fat levels observed in elite
runners range from 5% to 12% in men and 8% to 15% in women. A body-fat
level below these recommended amounts can signal overtraining or the
    possibility of an eating disorder.

Yes, but if you measured them using popular body fat measurement techniques,
they'd read way below that. Last time I got a reading, my body fat was
measured as 2.3%. On another occasion, I think I registered as about 5%. I'm
lean, but I'm not ripped like a pro-bodybuilder.

Thanks so much for your encouragment...

You might consider cycling, too. You can lose weight, cover longer
distances (see more), and go easier on your knees.

Agree with this. I was at a similar weight (slightly taller) when I started
weight loss, and didn't start to run until I lost several pounds (I think I
was 190 or less when I started running frequently). I did lower impact work
instead (weights, stationary bike, aerobics) I was always getting injured
    running at the heavier weight.

I'm not talking about average joe jogger here. I'm talking about real
athletes. Look at any of the top 1% of distance runners. Show me one
that is over 5% bodyfat. And you would tell me they all have an eating
disorder? Someone with an eating disorder is someone that is 40 lbs
overweight or someone that thinks the BMI charts are all wrong because
they don't have the will power to even get into the normal range.
    Excuses, excuses.

  14. why are we even kicking this around? you were right from the start
donnie....this Rick is a troll. you racing tomorrow night donnie?
all events? wearing those new nikes for the longer distance?....going
w/spikes for the 400? i'm tempted to dig out some spikes and give the
400 a whirl. i might just go anyway to check it out....

you're now suggesting in a way you train-coach only distance runners in
the top 1% of the world. remember what you said, "This is what I
have all my runners do. If they can't get their bodyfat to 5% or less,
there's no sense in me wasting my time with them".

    Quoted message said:

And you would tell me they all have an eating

    disorder?

i did not say anything...just pointed to Running Times. however I will
say you a troll and that's all. not a good one, not a sharp or
    knowledged one...just a troll.

a good troll would cover details and specifics. for example, a good
troll would mount the argument and clarifiy the statement to apply to
male runners exclusively. you leave it open and allow the statement
to apply to female runners as well. the majority of the top female 100
elite distance runners in the world bodyfat exceeds 5%. I don't know
of a female runner who's body fat does not exceed 5%. to find one
would be the exception, the rarity.

you're not a coach or trainer, just a troll (and an average one at
that). to respond to me you have to clean up your assertions and
statements because of how sloppily you make them.

another example of how you're not the brightest troll? Your
definition of eating disorder is so poorly stated...under your
definition....a person with bullemia does not have an eating disorder.
take a look at your words.

authentic people and good trolls don't make these kinds of errors.
they're not placed in a position of having to revise and clean up
    etc...their statements.

i don't want to make you feel bad, however you just need to brush up on
your troll skills, know what you're talking about, etc.....because
    right now...you simply don't.

good luck, you'll get better in time!

Yes and yes. I'm doing the mile. Might jump into the shorter stuff too,
    and call it a workout.

Don't think they allow spikes at this meet. Bring them just in case though.
