Actually the program has been used by experienced runners running their second, third, etc. marathons. Not a fan of the program, but as noted by the people who run it and participated you can finish a marathon following the program.

I´m pretty certain I´d need more than some experience with speed workouts to do, for instance, 4 x 1600m(400m jog)) at 5:30min/mile (= 10K pace - 35-40s/mile; even 12x400(400m) in 77s (= 10K pace - 55-60s/mile)!
