DV compresses each and every frame individually, rather like an
individual JPEG for every frame. Hard drive cameras use MPEG2, which
only stores two frames a second like that, the rest being just the
changes between each frame.

Just because MPEG2 can record footage into a smaller space with that
technique doesn't make it more "bad". MPEG2 is good enough for DVDs;
look how brilliant they can be. And HDV can still record sixty minutes
of high-definition footage on a standard DV tape, simply by using MPEG2
instead of DV.

The issue is they some cheaper editing software can be fiddly editing
MPEG2 footage, since individual frames cannot be isolated easily.

I did consider a hard drive based camera after a borrowed camera chewed
up a brand new tape, but their battery life seems rather pathetic
compared to DV. And you can't just swap in a new drive should it get
full while you're out and about.

There are pros and cons to both HD capture and mini DV capture. I have
always felt that the pros of mini dv outway the cons of hardrive. Tho
It seems the digital video induststry is moving towards harddrive
capture or other digital capture pushing recording to tape out of the
picute. This is not something that is happening over night, although I
do expect mini DV prices to steadily rise.

I was going to group that in with hardrives and figured they were
ehough different that I should just keep my mouth shut.
How big are the cards coming? You can get belts that hold a bunch
right?

i read a review from a skater on bhphotovideo who said he hated it b/c
is let dirt in very easily and poped off the lens. and skating and uni
film requirments are similar so i think i would "dissreccomend" it. i
was going to get it but decided to get a screw on lens.

i will try to get that shot of my uni, but i dont have a youtube
account, but i will try and set one up b4 i go away on vacation.

Why in the world would you be putting your camera or lens in the
dirt.... I could be wrong, but it seams to me a pretty easy thing to
keep clean. If that were the only downside to the lens it should be
pretty easy to work around.;)

needed frequent cleaning.'FOUND IT! ' (http://tinyurl.com/395m7t) its
