Crazy new contraption at Kew crits tomorrow

Hey all,

Sorry about semi-spam, but it's right on topic. I am starting up a new
company ferrying tourists around the city in pedal cabs. We need fit
drivers. Come see the vehicle at kew crits tomorrow night and have a
chat if you're interested. Good money and you get to train. You can
call yourself a pro cyclist. ;)

If you can't make it to Kew or you want a sneak peek, check out the
website if you want to have a look at the beast you'd have to pedal:

I know I'm probably nit-picking, but the fact that you're showing a
picture of a blackfella ferrying around a family of middle-class
conservative-looking whities is possibly gonna give people from
overseas the wrong picture of Australia. Might actually put them off,
to think we're all a bit "Driving Miss Daisy".

A second crazy new contraption may be me attempting to ride C grade crit on
my SS. I haven't gotten around to fixing my flat that I got on the way home
last week and I can't be arsed getting out in the shed tonight after a day
trip to Canberra (long day at that). Thought I might just have a crack on
the SS that used to be the fixie but now has a freehub on the back making it
44 x 16 inches (74.25 inches)......might be good for a laugh anyway,
especially at the hairpin each lap because my brakes are a bit squealy!!!

I think its all absolutely fine dandy and AOK. People of all colours are allowed to pedal these contraptions and get fit:D . Would not have noticed this until you pointed this out - and even then I'm struggling to take your point seriously.

Ebony, and Ivory, [and everyone else in this glorious melting pot] live together in perfect.................get over it.

Lets put it this way MM, would you see a picture of a white man pedalling a black middle class family around in advertising????? And what would your reaction be? ie Would you still not notice it?

this is all OT I know, but to answer your questions - probably not (but I would be unlikely to notice it unless there was bike prOn); and I honestly wouldn't have any negative race-based reaction if I did notice the skin of the subject matter. I'm aware of people's sensitivites, but my message is that IMHO sometimes we can get a bit carried away. In these forums it is awfully hard to properly convey context - and you really don't know me from a bar of soap so initially I hope you can give me (and others) the benefit of the doubt when you interpret my messages through your own personal context. I don't lack sensitivity on this type of issue. I have showed the site to some of my work colleagues including a PNG national, a german persian (charming but mixed up guy :D ), and a chinese and no-one was offended by anything, even when I pointed out what has apparently offended some.

Sorry if I came across bearing a big stick. Culturally and socially, particular images are normalised and we take them for granted ie don't see anything "wrong" with them or fail to notice any socio-political ideologies attached to them. That was my point, rather than implying you personally are insenstive to such, or racist, etc etc.

One classic way to overcome any normalisation of imagery etc is to invert the content ie black guy pedalling becomes a white guy pedalling. It's an interesting exercise to do (well, for academics, it's an interesting exercise to do).

And in Australia, we don't see too many non-caucasians riding in structured ways (racing, organised events etc). Why is that?

Hopping off my stack of bike tubes now ;)

you'll get more interest (other than nitpicking about the fact that you're clearly spreading the white supremicist message) if you let people know what kind of wage they might expect.

I hope no tourists are offended by the fact that we allow Indian taxi drivers to drive us white peoples around at 4am....

Anyone watch that ABC doco on Monday evening? Race is simply a pigment of our imaginations. :) :) :)

Seriously though, given my family background I'm amazed and annoyed I turned out so pale. My lack of melanin is not really all that useful this time of year!

The lads who race regularly are already looking to start a 'CabRace' around the Kew course :D:D:D

Could be the perfect handicapping system.
The stronger you are, the bigger the passenger/s you get...

Looks like there is plenty of room on board for a cattle prod as well, for checking that maxHR.

On a sidenote, this might give new meaning to "He was sitting on my wheel the whole damn time!"

OK, I'll jump in on this one. I'm a friend of Chris, helping him out find drivers. The 'wage' will be ~$30-$40/hour, but you'll be working on contract, so it's not technically a wage I think. Like being a courier, except pays 3-5 times as much (trust me, I used to be a courier).

You could also shoot Chris an email if you want details like this.

Yes, and he could answer every single email individually..... or he could communicate to multiple people all at once.. the beauty of newsgroups..

Chris is sending a white supremicist message? There's been some
misinterpretation somewhere in this thread.
