My Ortho forbid me to move my arm for 2 weeks. The plates can handle a good deal of stress before breaking, but you must remember that their only purpose is to hold the bones together until fusion occurs, not to stand in place of fusion...ie the plate will eventually break if fusion doesn't occur. Consult with your doctor regarding early movement, as only he knows how tightly he bridged your fracture. In my opinion, early movement is not worth the risk of a non union. Don't press your luck. No shrugging Either.

thanks tdone2 for having time to reply,,yes its better to wait and be patient,,Im feeling great now, I stopped pain meds,I cant wait to get an xray tomorrow to find out hows that plate look like..

Does anyone have experience of having the plate with the six screws removed that they could share?

Zero issues when mine was taken out. In and out in a few hours. On the bike the next day. Just had to be careful not to sweat too much during intervals. Standard wound care post op.

The type and number of metal bits used to fix an fx'd clavicle is going to vary from person to person, depending on the health of that person and the nature of the fracture. My fx'd clavicle could not be repaired--although the doctor said it needed repair--because of the risk of causing permanent nerve damage/paralysis as a result of other injuries in my torso. I did, however, have a plate and five screws removed from my right radius (bone in forearm). For a few weeks after the metal removal, I was only allowed to light lifting. The doctor wanted the screw holes to start filling with new bone. There was only pain for the first couple of days after the metal was taken out. I also had a screw removed from my right tibia. The day after the removal, I was allowed to bear some weight on my right foot. Surgery to remove the bits doesn't take long at all. When the plate and five screws were removed from my right radius, I believe I was in surgery for about 30 minutes. Note that this was just my experience, but my experience is unique to me as yours will be to you. I merely wanted to give an example of an experience that might be similar to what you might go through.

I would suggest you speak with your doctor about the procedure and what to expect in the days and weeks after surgery.

booked in to hav mine out next month but not sure weather to do it or not currently got my arm in a pot after snapping a tendon a couple of weeks ago.....if i do ile post up/img/vbsmilies/smilies/icon14.gif

Ok,,here it is 6 days post surgery and 12 days after accident,,my doctor gave permission to move my arm but no lifting and try the pendulum every 2 hours, ill be doing my PT in two weeks from now,,I like to thank this forum, you guys really did a big impact on my decision..so two things Ive learned,,normal heal if the brake is minor then absolutely surgery if major but still its based upon your doctor and how confident you are,,cheers..

Broke my clavical Jan 14 had plate and screws 3 days later . My distance between neck and shoulder was visually shortend
more then 2 cm. I was givin the option and wanted to go threw with the surgical procedure alot of my friends have had the same injury
and had not had the procedure leaving some odd collar bones protruding under there skin. Surgury took around three hours was released
in the afternoon i was very nervous to say the least before the operation.Everything went well and Im coming close to one month and still in
a fair amount of pain the first 2 weeks were definatily the most discomfortable. Other then the large scar I recieved visually the shoulder is level
and i am happy > Im still in the sling and have not tried to raise my arm obove the shoulder yet only doing small circles as advised by my doctor
very stiff and scratchy in rotary cuff area and numb feeling around wound wondering if feeling will come back in my upper cheast area

Dude you are now the forum. The reason it rocks is because people that have been through the process pass the information gained on to the next person that comes along with a broken collar bone. So watch for your chance to help out the next person and we will keep it rockin.

I got into a really bad car accident on the 21st of January, which resulted in a broken foot, sternum, and clavicle. They havent really mentioned anything about the sternum, so im assuming thats ok. The bone that goes to my middle toe is snapped in half, but they put me in a boot and said the only surgery id need would be cosmetic because the toe is now a little shorter. My clavicle though, they said I should have surgery. Its the left clavicle, towards the end, by my shoulder. Its broken right in half. Ive talked to alot of people, none of which had the surgery, and theyre fine. The bone pokes out a little further than the other one, but besides that, theyve healed like theyre supposed to. I dont REALLY care if the bone pops out a little, but id be lying if I said I dont care at all. I am a girl, after all. I really dont want to have surgery though.

1st of all, im pregnant, and im worried about the anesthesia. Its bad enough that I have to take loritabs for the pain. Which leads me to wonder...will the pain subside with surgery? I havent seen many people on here say it goes away 100%. The human body IS a wonderful thing, and it does heal on its own...but if I can help it along, should I? The doctor wouldnt even show me my xray, because hes so for the surgery (I believe for $, not for me personally), and I can tell its healing ok. Its only been a couple weeks, and I can wash my hair, do dishes, drive a car...most everything, except lift really heavy things...but after doing things for a while, my whole left arm, neck, and back start to hurt emmensely. But like I said, its only been a few weeks...not even the full recovery time. I wore the sling, and now im wearing the figure 8 thing...most of the time. The doctor said if I dont get the surgery, there will be long term damage and so on. I dont want to not be able to hold my new baby in 7 months because I didnt get this surgery...but I really cant bring myself to do it. Im scared, and I dont really think it needs to be done...but im not a doctor, and ive never been through this. Im freakin out...I have to go back wed. and give him an answer....

First you might want to consider finding another bone doc if for no other reason than to get a second opinion.. If a doctor refuses to show an x-ray or any result of a diagnostic test or image, that doctor is not performing his or her due diligence. You have a right to see all of your medical records, x-rays of clavicles included. I've never encountered an orthopod that has acted in that way. All of the orthopedic surgeons I've seen (the first was in 1973, when I was nine) have showed me (and where relevant my parents) the x-rays, MRI images, and CT images to help explain his (they've all been males) reasoning for his treatment plan, no matter whether that plan is invasive or noninvasive. I wouldn't trust such a doctor, but I suppose others may feel differently. Given your pregnancy, it's likely wise to carefully consider the surgery. I'd suggest you ask your OB-GYN for a referral to an orthopedist or that your OB-GYN talk to the orthopod in question. With all that said, it's no surprise that you still experience significant pain. After all, you did mention that you're only a couple of weeks post injury. Surgery for a lot of people is a scary thing. Certainly, all surgery carries risk, both in terms of how you ultimately heal and function and in any untoward effects of surgery. What needs to be remember is that surgery has advanced just as the rest of medicine has. As such, surgery today typically results in less post-surgical pain, fewer unwanted effects from the anesthesia, and less time "out of action." It's also true that people tend to fear what they don't know. We humans also tend to err in evaluation the risk of something. The perceived risk is quite often greater than the actual risk. No matter what, tread carefully when asking medical questions online. It's for you and your doctors to decide if surgery is the best treatment plan. Also, surgery of a given type isn't a "one size fits all" thing. What's right for you is heavily dependent on your injury, your medical history, and complicating factors. Good doctors, or rather responsible doctors, evaluate whether a given treatment should be done on those factors and others. The injuries you read about in this forum may have no relevance to your situation at all, so you should not expect at all for a treatment modality done on forum member X to have the same results (both in healing, comfort, and surgical side effects) for you. Good luck, both with your clavicle and your incoming baby.

beaniebo,,my sympathy to you about your accident,, IMHO let your colarbone heal on its own for now, mostly concern is with your unborn child, broken clavicle can be corrected on a later time with a great orthopedic surgeon or you might need to find a better specialized doctor for second opinion, which I did as well,,as ive said just my opinion..good luck and hoping for your fast recovery..
