This is absolutely true and borne out by studies that have found that bike accident rates decline with an increase in the number of riders on the road.
There will be a backlash from angry cagers infuriated about the fact that they have to share the road with a growing number of bicycles, and there will be altercations, vehicular assaults, threats and intimidation, but hopefully most will accept the fact that they need to share the road.
Fortunately, the number of angry, reactionary drivers on the road is very small compared to the number of drivers who get along fine with cyclists.

The Fox News story isn't up yet, but they just reported that police used the video of the driver to charge the man (75 years old) with improper use of the horn, harassment and something else.

Kudos to the cyclists for taking video and turning it in. This guy just got nationally embarrassed.

Careful now, you might get your own self tossed in the jail.

Absolutely not! As a benevolent despot, I would rule with a velvet fist.

Two different crimes with two different levels of punishment. laws are good and can be properly enforced.
And if he had a dead body in his trunk.... you would still be missing the point wouldn't you.

People have always and will forever be people. Cultures can and do change... but the change can't be forced (or wished) on a population. Even with change... accidents will always happen. There is a science as to why human caused accidents happen (like what I described above)... and that will not change. If the fear caused by traffic scares a person... maybe road-cycling isn't their sport. In cycling there are crashes... and there is and always has been blood with cycling crashes. Don't expect changes in that.

Try to understand this one thing. The driver that almost hit me (in my "novel") did nothing wrong. The part of the brain that blocked mundane stuff from his memory... is not part of the conscious brain.... meaning he had no control over that. How can you hold a person responsible for actions outside of their control. Of course laws don't always reflect that. But the laws don't change the out-come of events outside of human control ether.

These posts always go the same direction. The leftest, liberal, Earth worshiping environmentalists, wanting to force people to be cyclist, and band private automobile ownership. Hoping to bolster there ranks with new followers. It gets old.
They use plenty of fake, silly, arguments... none of which ever hold up to reason or facts. Then they call names and act like reasoned thought is wrong because it hurts their feelings. It is like trying to reason with children.
The bad thing is I really think some of these guys have valuable cycling knowledge. But instead of wanting to share cycling information.... they want to spread idealogical progressivism that was out-dated back when cyclist still rode penny farthings.
They are fearful, angry, and resistant to leaning and understanding. Most are committed to the religion of Environmentalism... while deigning it as faith. So they become zealots of a cause without logic, reason, or an understanding of even their own faith. They are sad people.

My God, man...that's BEAUTIFUL!!!

I would buy you a beer and box of ammunition in your favorite caliber!

I've said it for years decades...if there was ever a sport filled with more nancy-boy socialists, bed-wetting libtards and enviro-whackos, psuedo-acadamecians...I've yet to discover it.

You had me at "penny farthings"! Such prose...such truth! The whole thing should be a sig-line!

You, good sir, have earned the CampyBob Institute of Cycling Excellence Seal of Logic, Rational Thought and Meritorious Conservative Statement of Fact!

Ok...back to our game of Angry Birds Cyclists.

Yes he did. He overtook you and cut into your lane. He would not have done that if he just passed a Volvo. Which is the same thing.

1) Auto-piot as you describe it is doing what you normally do without thinking about it.

2) I think human beings like lab rats and weasels are capable of behavior modification and yes I believe practice leads to mastery.

3) Why would I seek a doctor's opinion on the subject of angry cagers? I've been run over by cars a couple of times. I don't have a family physician, but I know a couple of good orthopedists.

While you were having a fight or flight reaction over a car parking, I was sailing by in the left lane without a care in the world having anticipated the problem well in advance. Did you see me? I smiled and waved at you.

How is your existence, your right to the road and by extension, your life, "mundane stuff"?

Hopefully the man will be heavily penalized, including losing his right to drive.

If I had choose to drive the Volvo that day.... he would have likely just followed behind me. But then and most days... I choose to be a cyclist. I understand the risks and take them of my own free will.

Have you ever shattered a side view mirror with your U-lock?

My "right to the road" almost assures me of accidents. Roads are dangerous and exercising my right to the roads on a bicycle does mean getting hurt or killed. It is all part of the sport. I love cycling and accept the risks.

No... but I almost accidently almost hit my own Porsche, with a golf ball hit from the ninth hole once. I saw my car in the parking lot from tee area and thought OMG someone could hook the ball and hit my car. So... I guess I put that thought in my own head.

It isn't a bad idea to be careful about what thoughts we put in our own heads.

Back in the old days.. people who read newspapers everyday learned a lot about how and why neighbors acted certain ways. But.... in my case... I was also from a police family. The man will likely be fined... and will also likely be buried soon as well. Search: Dementia

It is sad to see this happen... and it happens more often than apparently some people realize. Ether... sudden anger or sexual acting out... are both classic signs. It has NOTHING to do with bicycles... and is very sad... IMHO. I am glad no one was hurt.

Yeah... when I was growing up in a tiny little Ohio rural village and then at age 13 got my first road bike (a new, 60's Schwinn Varsity). I think even back then some people wondered what the hell a kid would like about a bicycle like that. But I remained normal. And I like people of all kinds and types. Even though you and I are completely correct... it would be a boring world if we all marched to the same pounding drum.

I love cycling... and I am happy to share my sport with those those nancy-boy socialists, bed-wetting libtards and enviro-whackos. Heck... you and I may even get some of them to see the light. And if not... and worst comes to worst.... I'd bet we're better shots.

Thx for the award... it's my tag line now!

Yeah... when I was growing up in a tiny little Ohio rural village and then at age 13 got my first road bike (a new, 60's Schwinn Varsity).

I'm also from a small, rural Ohio town. I learned to ride on a 1957 Schwinn Phamtom that weighed more than me! In the '60's I was on a Schwinn 3-speed 'English Racer' and then a Schwinn Continental.

And if not... and worst comes to worst.... I'd bet we're better shots.

LOL! Indeed! I still shoot 3-position smallbore with an Anschutz, service rifle and high power.

We live in a great country...where a FIFTEEN-year old girl can drive a Lambo Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale to high school!

http://jalopnik.com/5944568/is-a-15+year-old-texan-girl-driving-this-ultra-rare-lamborghini-to-high-school?tag=lamborghini

Thank God we have a 3' rule and no-texting-while-driving law on the books to keep her inexperienced cute butt from hammering me and my 16-pound bicycle into the pavement with her $200,000+/200+ MPH, zero-to-warp-9-in 3.4-seconds daddy issues machine while applying makeup and pulling 1.1 G's exiting the high school parking lot.

We need another law. Let's call this one the 'Save Campy's Skinny Ass From Wealthy High School Chicks with Hot Step-Mothers' law...'cause you just know that the step-mom is a hot twenty-something!

And be careful where you park that Porsche at the club! If they swing like I do, you might want to consider parking behind the caddie shack!

Sounds like we need a law against bad golfers! /img/vbsmilies/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Better yet--everybody should have to carry insurance against hitting a Porsche with a golf ball! Whether or not you golf near a Porsche, or even golf at all!
