2008 Tour De France : Stage 1 Brest - Plumelec 195 km Saturday, July

...actyally taking into account PPete's comment and the fact that he had his left arm bent and looked to be in pain crossing the line, maybe the polkadot is gone from his chances.

Soler lost over 3 minutes. Unless he thinks he has a shot at GC (only having 2 riders come to pull him back tells me not.) Should put him in good position for the polkadot when the real mountains start.
Yes. I would expect to see some Soler inspired fireworks in the mountain stages - he will probably not be a threat in GC (I bet he will lose more time before they hi the mountains) and will focus on getting stage wins and the polka dot jersey.

LOL. Yes, we are all pretending that OP ended...

But I continue to wonder whether Valverde has a GT in him without a jour sans. I think he will blow up on one of the mountain stages...
Yea, he blew up pretty spectacularly last year. He is riding "like a man posessed" as some half-wits would say....man listening to Eurosport is better..

Unless he broke his arm...

Looks like he got 1 second over the others.

They gave him 1 second in the final standings.
He might be able to keep the yellow shirt for the first three stages if they can bunch finish the next two stages.

Not sure what's going on at www.letour.fr, they've given the top 88 the same time. And, Soler is only 3 seconds down. This obviously needs adjustment.

BTW, does anybody know why Dekker wasn't chosen in the Rabobank squad?
Rabobank and Dekker are getting it on, coz they don't get along.

Okay thumper... I lost the bet... but all four of my picks came in the top 25... and your main pick... Steegmans... placed 86th <snicker> compared to mine coming 8th.

But I'm the loser. So do we keep a tally throughout the race? Or do you want your 50 Lire now?... :D

Yeah... he is Cadel's opposite.

I suppose when he is leading the race in the Pyrennees... the Italians will come out with some damning OP Valverde evidence... and we will have a repeat of last year's scandal.

Stage 15 ends in Italy? When Piti is in yellow in Prato Nevoso, might be interesting to see whether he's still in yellow in Cuneo.

What was Saunier Duval doing with Ricco in the middle of the bunch with only 2km to go?? No wonder he managed only 5th place, he has no chance to go for victory with this shitty team. Valverve was great but he would have had hard time with Ricco..

Mamma mia, what a win by Valverde. He is in top shape. Whoa.

Interesting seeing some other people with GC ambitions - like Evans, Riccò and Schleck right up there at the end. Good signs for the rest of the Tour.

Too bad about Soler, who came in something like 3.5 minutes down. Apparently he is quite badly beaten up.

And he almost ran straight into the barricades trying to chase back after the crash- I guess he had his head down and didn't see the turn.

or else, wasn't able to properly turn at high speeds with one wrist sprained and the other potentially broken, according to some reports.

That makes sense. I hope it isn't too severe... like a break... but it doesn't look good... :(

Unfortunately, the type of fracture they're mentioning (a scaphoid fracture) is not a good one - both in that it's difficult to diagnose (ie. often doesn't show up on initial x-rays, so usually gets casted for 7-10 days if any suspicion then repeat the x-rays), and also that there isn't a good blood supply to one end of the bone so it has a higher frequency of non-union (aka not healing). The report at L'Equipe says he'll be re-examined tomorrow to determine if he can continue at the TdF.

well, I basically translated and paraphrased everything in the report for you already - would you like a more formal translation? ;)

I noticed Sastre, Cunego and Menchov lost 7 secs to Valverde in 14th and 21st place respectively. And Moreau lost 39 secs in 70th... assuming he has GC aspirations. Explains why Evans was making sure he kept an eye on things at the front... not wanting a break to form on the last climb at the finish that he missed.

It was ironic seeing Silence Lotto up the front in the closing kilometres... with Cadel there, and not seeing them at the front much when they were suppposedly nearly all there to help McEwen in previous years.
