  1. 85 degrees F and 90% humidity this AM when I arrived at the trailhead for
the Saturday morning group ride. As we all got ready to go, I realized I'd
grabbed a mismatched set of gloves from the stack on top of the parts bin in
the garage. The lefty was mine, and the righty was from a pair used by my 9
year old son. Needless to say, it didn't fit. None of the other guys had
spares. Damn! "What the hell," I thought, "how bad can it be without
gloves." I found out soon enough.

High humidity, no gloves, and gripshifts is a pretty crappy combination.
Brake leverage and steering weren't all that optimized either. I did one
loop and headed for home. Bummer ride day. Oh well, that's one of those
    mistakes you only make once.

I forgot my gloves yesterday too. Caused a slight bit of discomfort, ripped a
callous or 2 off and the inside of my thumbs are a bit rough today. Other
than that, I had a BLAST.

I normally do too, but I'd cleaned out the stash recently when we took the
family van on a road trip to western NC where I managed to squeeze in some
riding. As it was quite the mudfest, I took the lot and threw 'em in the
washer. I had five pairs of sparkling clean gloves sitting on top of the
parts bin just waiting to be tossed back in the car. Stupidly I just
grabbed a (mismatched) pair and went on my merry way.

If the weather is warm I usually ride gloveless. I actually prefer the
feel- when I buy gloves, I always choose the ones that have the thinnest
    possible palms.

I gotta find the perfect fit first. I love my current gloves, but I
think they slide just a little, causing painful bumps on my inner thumb.

I'm guessing the key factor was those GripShifts. If they're newish they'll
rip your skin off; if old they'll be REALLY slippery.

It's mainly the damn humidity. When I lived in California I never rode with
gloves, but when you live in the eastern VA swampland, the air's so damn
saturated already there's no where for the sweat to evaporate so it just
winds up on the grips. Lack of precision shifting was a pain in the ass,
but when I started to have problems holding onto the bar and brake levers
    (honest officer I wasn't drinking!) I figured I'd call it a day.

I usually ride gloveless too, although sometimes I regret it. Like
yesterday, I was riding one of my favorite trails and it turned out to
be muddier than I have ever seen it and the humidity just sucked the
life out of me, so I got off the trail onto the fire road. It was
downhill most of the way, and speed was limited only by my courage. I
kept thinking how much it would hurt if I wiped out on that gravel.
Fortunately, I didn't. I may be cowardly, but I don't have any fresh
wounds. The chronic pain from the ones I got a week ago has finally
    stopped.

I have that thought process too, but not about my hands -- about my
legs. Visions of some of the road rash from the Tour dance in my head.
    Ugh!

The day I bought my first mountain bike, I decided I didn't need to go
inside to get my gloves before practicing clipping out. "I'm in the
driveway," I reasoned, "What could possibly go wrong?"

I still have scars on my left palm from the mini-gravel. And I don't
    ride my bike without gloves.

Are you serious? I've had my only pair of gloves for 10 years. They're a
bit worn but not too bad.

I have a couple of those: (1) forgetting to refill my water bottle and (2)
driving into the garage with the bikes on the roof - fortunatly my GFs
beater took the brunt of the impact

exactly - for me gloves are for the eventual digger

I favor the specialized - when are worn-out they become my gym gloves

One of the few times I forgot my gloves was on a ride during a business
trip. It can be tricky remembering all the little stuff to pack up. It was
a bad place to forget them - South Mountain, near Phoenix. Did a nice
washout just afer suffering through the climb up Mormon, and spent the
next couple of days in meetings with bandaged hands.

After awhile, the continuous "what happened? questions become more
    bothersome than the pain.

    Ugh!

Legs, hands, they are all road rash material. I have a nasty scar just
below my right elbow because I toppled over at low speed on concrete
fumbling for my very low mounted water bottle. I still have visible
bicycling scars on my knees and feet from when I was about 8 years old.

Driveway? Should have practiced on the grass.

It is a good habit, but it makes hot rides even hotter. Here in the
midwest, humidity is usually very high in the summer and the trails
aren't as rocky as out west. Mostly we have trees and dirt, so you
aren't as likely to get ripped up in a fall. Most of the bleeding will
come from sharp points on the bike, not the ground. I wear gloves if it
    isn't hot.

That statement assumes that there was grass anywhere nearby. There
    wasn't.
