Lance for number 7?

First let's lay odds on him even trying. We'll know this long before the
'05 TdF.

As savvy an entrepreneur as he surely knows the benefits of 'going out' a
winner. Or, in another's words, "A good man knows his limitations." and I'm
sure LA knows his.

mid-August (if not before):

Our theory at the LBS is that the only likely "accident" that would cost
him the race is an overzealous and tipply American fan that might knock
him of the bike. LOL.

I think the interesting part is that they just got new sponsers. And I
have to believe those new sponsers aren't going to sponser the team
(including rolling Lance out as was shown on something I caught on OLN
called "The Lance Chronicles"😉. So my guess is that he already agreed to
race and probably do the TDF in some capacity. What would be interesting
is if somewhere during the season it became apparent he wasn't the
strongest rider (could happen in a year's time, who knows) and ended up
helping someone else. I doubt that will happen. But that would be more
entertaining and more compelling a story than Lance going out for #7 with
Team Discovery.

I would be very surprised if Discovery Communications signed on for
sponsorship of the team without some assurance from Lance that he would at
least go one more year in the spotlight. And the TdF *is* the spotlight.

I heard him say he loved the TdF most of all. That leads to believe he would
definitely race the TdF. Also heard rumors he'd like to race the Giro. He
needs something else to prove he's a great cyclist, something to move him
closer to Merckx. Winning another classic would do it. That, or trying the

dollar *team* sponsorship contract had anything like an ironclad "if this one
guy doesn't race, we don't pay" clause. What fool would sign a contract with a
clause like that? Besides, how could they possibly enforce it?

The same way race car sponsors collect monetary reparations if a team
doesn't meet stated criteria? Many of those sponsorships are based
on who's driving the car, usually with advertising and public
appearances designed around the star.

It's as easily enforced as any other clause. Break it and the sponsor
doesn't pay, or the sponsor pays less. Who says a sponsorship
contract requires 100% payment up front?
