I have a 52/39 12/23 9 speed setup on my road bike.
I think I need to change the 39 ring for a smaller one.
I think it is practised by shimano et al to copy pro set
ups. I'm not a pro ;-)
I've heard that 52/39 is too small a jump to properly
utilise 9 speed. I'd agree, it's all very nice having so
many options 90% of the time, but I'm quite happy to trade
that in to be happier for the 10% of the time!
what is a good guess for the size I need [1], or do I go
half way to the ratio I want and change the back block for a
12/25 next time?
Obviously this is going to be a compromise. I don't want to
end up with 2 ranges and no overlap.
[1] I know its almost an impossible question, but I haven't
ridden anything with low ratios before, I've just got
by. My hack is worse 52/42 14/24. As a guide I run out
of gears at about a 1 in 8 (I think).
