sounds like i'd get on with mr. bridgers. it's ironic that i've broken my arm just as i'd come to
the decision to concentrate more on climbing again rather than mountain-biking. i realised that i
considered most mountain bikers i was meeting to be [censored], and i'm attracted to activities which
have an ethical code that extends beyond 'spend, spend, spend'.

I don't know you, so I won't make any generalizations that suggest I understand what makes you tick.
However, my experience is that most serious climbers tend to be a bit self-absorbed and narrowly

families on dirt paths to freeride Dewbies with more money than sense. Adherence to narrowly focused
ethical codes by broad swaths of the population is just unrealistic in an open society.

My point? If you wanna climb, go climb. If you wanna bike, go bike. That's really the only reason to
do either. Choosing an activity based on some perceived social context is silly. Go ride your bike
and reject the whole marketing mania. Many of us do, and enjoy the sport as much, or more, than
those who must have the lastest widget and carbon fiber baubles that get launched every year.
Marketing has little to do with the ethics of those participating in an activity but is a reflection
of the larger numbers and types of participants. I have no doubt that, should climbing achieve the
widespread appeal of off road cycling, a similar marketing effort would soon appear.

Climb, ride, ignore the silliness.

i've been climbing longer than i've been biking (20 + 14 years respectively), it's just a case of
shifting the emphasis.

Nothing says you've got to "share the sport" with anyone you don't want to. I do a good portion of
my riding alone, and when I ride in a group its usually with only a few folks that I like and
respect. Sure you run into knuckleheads out on the trail, but the world is a big place. The fact

I think you may be overstating situation a bit as well. There is a huge marketing machine that
caters to the crowd with more money than sense. No denying that at all.. However, I think anyone
that spends any amount of time in the saddle understands its all hype meant to generate $$$'s for
manufacturers.

Maybe I'm not getting your point, but I can't imagine why you would let the actions of others
determine the level of enjoyment you get from the sport. I know for a fact there are idiots in the
climbing world. I've met several. I'm sure you would admit that there's a more insular culture in
the climbing world that differs markedly from the broader scope of mountain biking. If that's what
attracts you, then its really not the sport itself that is giving you pause, but the segment of
society that engages in it. That's fine by me, but I just hate to see it as a reflection on the
sport itself.
