sounds like i'd get on with mr. bridgers. it's ironic that i've broken my arm just as i'd come to
the decision to concentrate more on climbing again rather than mountain-biking. i realised that i
considered most mountain bikers i was meeting to be [censored], and i'm attracted to activities which
have an ethical code that extends beyond 'spend, spend, spend'.

The media tends to make being ethical about anything much less than stylish, so those "tats" are
just a product of media hype and the mass marketing of mountain biking. The climbing community will
always benefit from not being very stylish and too much work for trendoids to really permeate their
sport. Climbing ethics will never be threatened by the mass media the way mountain biking has the
last ten years.

As I did last Summer and have continued to do, my rides tend to be longer and the further out you
get, the more difficult the route, and the less known the area, one tends to encounter fewer
"[censored]". Making your own slice of heaven on two wheels is definitely the answer.

don't really agree; these days climbing (unlike, say, spelunking) is one of the 'hot' sports - but
the point is it does have a system of ethics that is communicated to its adherents by the media &,
more importantly peer pressure. this is conspicuously absent in the mtb community - try and tell
people the score and you just get accused of elitism.

of course, money + mass media corrupts everything, cf the obscene scrambles up everest each season.

You snipped what I wrote in reference to why climbing is not permeated by as many trendoids as
mountain biking. It's much more physically demanding, chance of death is much higher, and
acrophobics need not apply. Those three points alone keep the worst of idiots away from climbing and
mountain biking does not have those benefits available for basic participation. Granted, many of the
trails you or I may ride are physically demanding, have a higher chance of death in the event a
mistake is made, and would make an acrophobic [censored] themselves, but the percentage of those who
choose to ride trails on a bicycle and enjoy our kind of riding is diminishing by the sheer number
of participants.

no more long overseas trips for me, not any more - sick of seeing what tourism does to places. why
go elsewhere when i've got some of the best riding in the world on my doorstep? 4 more weeks and
hopefully i'll be back on my local trails...
