I understand that the path is to be "closed" over the winter months to allow some recovery from
and unexpected large number of visitors this summer. Walkers are being asked to seek alternative
routes to avoid erosion........best contact one of the visitors' centres for accurate up-to date
    info on this.

"closed" sums it up. They will be trying this on a hill soon. Oh too late, Nine Standards Rigg.

Why did they push this as an LDP?

But there is no mention of the wall-walk being closed at the above mentioned web site, at least not
on the "Home", "News" or "Walking" pages. Glen McLean Ottawa - with a view of the Gatineau Hills if

I was at a meeting this evening with the Northumberland NP Sustainable Tourism Officer and she
assured us the path is not closed over winter. What may happen is that if any section appears to be
under stress due to bad weather, walkers may be asked to take an alternative while remedial work is
    carried out.

    You mean it's not trespassing?

It may be.. but that may not mean illegal - note the 'uk' in the newsgroup title. (I would avoid
hunts, and bringing a load of mates and a sound system though)

Trespassing is not against the law in England and Wales, outside very restricted circumstances. It
    is NOT illegal, people!!

What about criminal damage whilst trespassing?

What's the view taken on "wild camping" along the Wall now ?

When i was about 11 my family walked the length of the wall camping wild every night. Now, some 20
years on i am anxious to repeat it but am not sure whether camping is tolerated still.

We camped pretty well where we liked about 6 or 7 years back. There was one spot where camping on
the village green was a legal entitlement, but I forget where.

So what are these new rights under CROW all about then, if not to allow access where previously
    it wasn't?

Trespass law may be 'a mess'; but it does exist, and there's a lot of it.

Destroying cairns, of course, is a grave offence (-:

Building them in the first place is a capital offence.

    "CAMPING AND THE LAW

The Trespass (Scotland) Act of 1865 makes it an offence to encamp or light fires on private land
without the consent of the landowner. It has not been used recently against hillwalkers or climbers,
but the MCofS believes it should be amended so that responsible wild camping is no longer a criminal
offence. The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994) gives the police powers to deal with
either an encampment which involves more than six vehicles or a smaller encampment where there is
damage or a public order offence. It has not yet affected wild camping and appears unlikely to. The
Road Traffic Act 1988 makes it an offence to drive a motor vehicle onto private land without lawful
authority. No offence is committed, however, where a person drives within 15 yards of a public road
for the purpose of parking. This does not imply that a person has a right to do so."

I believe the legal term "encampment" involves something a bit more permanent than overnight camping
in a small tent. However, it's moot anyway - it all changes (in Scotland) next year when Wild
Camping (the sort we're talking about on this NG) becomes a right enshrined in law.

I don't suppose you "soft Southerners" need such a thing as you can always make it back to the pub
after your brief rambles (Joke - honestly!!!)

An encampment doesn't mean a tent - it means eg a gypsy camp, or something more permanent than you
    wildcamping.

I mean it's not illegal, full stop. Neither is trespassing (with a couple of unusual exceptions).
