Just took a look at the demo video, a cool torch, and very gadgety!

I've got a Fliklite: fliklite.co.ukhome.htmlOpen ↗ It's quite small, but solidly built, and
the light is nice and bright. It doesn't have all the features that your's has, but it turns on
and off! :o)

I'm glad I never bought a head torch instead, for anyone who remembers! ;o)

I have several LED torches. My favourites are

(a) one from Maplin at £18 (iirc) with 2 brighenesses at either 3 or 10 LEDs, giving a life of 80 or
25 hours respectively (I verified the 25 hours on NiMH although it's noticeably dimmer at the
end). Batteries are 4xAA. (www.maplin.co.uk)

(b) a plug-in replacement from "newbeam" for the Mini Maglite (AA size) which has 3 LEDs which I
heartily recommend. Except it's £17. That's from www.7dayshop.com. Has a red LED to say when to
change batteries.

The great thing about these is they run great from NiMH cells. They are not so voltage sensitive
like standard torches and of course they last much longer.

I have other LED torches but they take non-standard batteries (eg N size) so I use them much less.

I have an Eternalight, plus many other LED torches. Most of the best stuff you have to get direct
from the US.They haven't really caught on yet over here, possibly because the battery manufacturers
prefer us to use torches that provide more heat than light.

HOW MUCH!!!!!

I use a Petzl Tikka. weighs next to nothing so always there in the top pocket of my sac or on my
head at night. When I'm camping it goes between the inner and outer doors so I can find it in the
middle of the night. Good enough to light my way where there is any kind of path to follow. The only
drawback is that it can get in the way when looking through the viewfinder of a camera on a tripod.

Looks like excellent technology. As a general rule you can often find something nearly as good the
very latest expensive LED technology in the form of "Chinese" copies at around 1/3 or less of the
price. And if you wait a year, the cheap copies of next year's latest technology, while not as good
the real thing, will be probably be as good or better than last year's best. But you do have to be
careful, and try stuff out (or find reviews) because some of the the cheap copies are rubbish.

For example, the cheap copies of this year's Petzl Tikkas are not quite as good as the real thing,
but are as good as last year's Tikkas, and *very* much cheaper.

street cred. They do look very good and there's a good chance I'll be on the hill a fair bit after
dark this winter. Is there no end to it all? GPS, expensive boots, mobile phone.... I curse the day

Did you see this month's Trail? They recommend a head torch be worn around the neck for better
peripheral vision. Hope it's not too tight...

I didn't, but this strikes me as missing an awful lot of the basic point of a headtorch, which is
you get light where you look by being fixed relative to your eyes.

The Tikka certainly is. I also use mine when running in the dark (on a reservoir road well away from
street lighting).

I also have a Patzl Zoom and a Micro and quite happily used the Micro pre-tikka days. The zoom is
great if you really need a long beam (crossing difficult terrain, searching etc.) but it is overkill
for most of the time. Mind you I am quite happy walking in the dark most of the time which makes
batteries last even longer!

I use a Surefire L4 myself. Take a look at www.surefire.com Bloody expensive, but probably the best
anywhere. I can only justify the cost because I use it for work. There's quite a few on UK Ebay at
the moment. The G2 goes quite cheap but is incandescent. Mike.

"Yes, but". The "but" is that those using focusing lenses with white LEDs are still not as good as a
decent filament bulb for casting a beam, which is often what you need on the front of a bike. But
they're getting there, and the best are certainly better than the grot that serves a lot of people
for a front lamp.

For rear lamps there are BS compliant steady red LED lamps like the Cateye AU100. Excellent pieces
of kit, very highly recommended.

But if you want lots of light without chewing batteries and aren't riding sports machinery, consider
a hub dynamo. Practically no drag on the good ones and you've always got lights ready for action.
Get lamps with a standlight function and they'll keep LED backups burning for a few minutes while
you're stood still at junctions etc.

So do I. It's wonderfully lightweight - the only thing I find is that the fixed position isn't
always to my liking. I also use a couple of lovely cheap LED head torches from, guess where, Lidl
