Matthew is an erudite, perceptive man, many of his essays are of the
highest quality, and he has an innate wit. He like any other human
being has faults and occasionally screws thing up - so congratulations
Matthew on talking utter bollocks!

He's not a blithering idiot? He does have a point about the trash, but
the rest is ridiculous and worse.

That kind of writing colour people's attitude. Replace cyclist with
Jew, or Homosexual, or Arab, or Gypsy, or Arsenal Supporter etc and
you will see it for what it is.
It's prejudice hiding behind so-called fun.

It is a backlash, similar to that against immigrants, triggered by the
perception that they are being given unfair advantages over other
groups, and then abusing those other groups.

Cycling injury: woman seriously injured but wire trap for cyclists in
park could have decapitated victim.
by Murdo Maguire -- last modified 12-07-2006 05:39
A mother of three who narrowly escaped decapitation after riding into
a thin metal wire that had been strung across a path popular with
cyclists had been named by police.
Kate Henery, 38, was scarred for life when she was thrown from the
saddle as she cycled through a park with her seven-year-old son
Fergus. The wire left a 5in gash across her forehead and under her
left eyebrow, missing her eye by a fraction of an inch. Police believe
that if the wire had been a few inches lower it could have killed her.
End quote.
There is no excuse for this, imagine Parris's whining and snivelling
were a newspaper to call for gays to have their heads cut off...

We also have the new sport of driving beside cyclists and pushing them off,
putting them in a wheelchair or worse. Perhaps the nice Mr Parris could say
something witty to justify that too?
He should be invited to a few hospital wards to see just how amusing his

A gay man was kicked to death on South Bank. I think the attackers
filmed it on their mobiles. Were a national newspaper writer to cite
the unpleasant behaviour of another, seperate homosexual as
justification to slice random gay men's faces open with razor wire, I
wonder how Matthew would react...

Not as though I've ever witnessed motorists chucking litter out of
their vehicles. What a moron - tanker loads of molasses? We used to
make our glucose at Cargill from the enzymatic hydrolysis of starch
obtained from Maize - get it right.

Lucozade is sugary water- you'd get a sugar rush then a trough of
fizzy drink despair. "Isotonic" just means balanced with salts.
WTF is "cyclist height" anyway? Bout the same as a van, range rover,
lorry....

Speaking as someone who has cleared up after a good number of races at all
levels, I have some sympathy with his complaint. I don't believe cyclists
are guilty of flinging most of the Lucozade bottles - they don't fit in a
bottle cage, for one thing, and for another cyclists normally carry their
drinks in bidons, which us amateurs can't afford to just fling away
(although I have heard national level coaches urging kids to do so). But
the foil pouches in which energy gels are supplied make particularly
disgusting litter, and they, and the wrappers of energy bars, are thickly
carpeted behind any passing bike race.
Still, inciting murder is a pretty extreme response; and I simply do not
believe that, over all, cyclists litter disproportionately.

I think a complaint to the police would be more in order. Incitement
to murder is a serious offence.

Someone tried that after Clarkson "joked" about killing cyclists.
IIRC we are not an identifiable sub-group and nobody was actually
named, so no go.

"Incitement".
The offence of incitement occurs when a person seeks to persuade
another to commit a criminal offence. A person is guilty of incitement
to commit an offence or offences if:
1. s/he incites another to do or cause to be done an act or acts
which, if done, will involve the commission of an offence or offences
by the other; and"
From the CPS .

I don't think they do, either. Where I live, there's much litter and
virtually no cyclists.
Hampstead Heath has a litter problem which sure don't come from cyclists...
.... but Mr Parris might see complaints about this as 'below the belt'.

Indeed. A gross calumny.
None of my Catalan friends still value items using the Peseta.

I don't doubt you but I do found that surprising on several levels.
Apart from the waste and the nuisance the weight penalty of an empty
bidon is more than compensated for by the reduced drag of a bottle in
a cage compared to that of an empty cage.

I have no sympathy with people who throw their foils and other
wrappers onto the road. These things weigh virtually nothing and can
easily be slipped into a back pocket.
