year to be laid off. I hope the situation improves very soon!

Many years ago I was laid off on Christmas Eve. My parents were out of
town for the duration of the holidays, and I was living alone and not in a
relationship at the time. That was a truly black Christmas. :-( I sat at
the piano endlessly playing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and
crying. (I'm a sentimental slob.)

Keep a stiff upper lip, and since hubby is working, hopefully you can still
have a wonderful holiday.

Apply today and unemployment benefits will kick in just before
Christmas with a 3-week payment (in most states), so consider it
a vacation (with up to 3/5ths normal pay depending on how low
your State's maximums are). In TX you get about $1,300/month max
(assuming you made more than $18/hour for the last 6 quarters).

It really sucks to be laid off or fired during the holidays. Unfortunately
that's when companies exercise their (much earlier in the year) rethinking
of budgets for the coming year. It's just a damn shame they keep people on
until right before the holiday season (getting as much work out of them as
possible within the existing budget, I suppose) before they let the axe
fall. It's cruel.

I say if a company knows they need to make cuts in July (that's if a
company's fiscal - and it's FISCAL, not Physical! gawd I hate hearing that
mispronunciation!) year ends June 30 and they get the report back from the
accountants in July, then fire people in July. Or August. Don't keep
someone working, thinking everything is hunky-dory, until the end of the
year.

I have learned from the past, that if you are with the one you love most,
these times are bearable. I hope it gets sorted out very soon.

Sorry to hear that, Jani. It's a rotten time of year to be laid off.
Funny, though - I've known a number of people who got laid off, only to
fall on their feet and land a much better job because of their
experience. Good luck.

Very sorry to hear that, Jani. That majorly sucks. 🙁 Seven years ago (at
this exact time of year), I got laid off (most of my department did, in
fact). It's never easy to lose your job, but to have it happen at this time
of year just makes it that much harder.

It's too bad unemployment insurance only lasts about 6 weeks. And it's a
pittance compared to what you earned. I suppose something is better than
nothing, but still... you pay into the system for years and get nothing
back. Ticks me off. That's why when I was able to get food stamps I
certainly took advantage of it. I'd been paying into the system for (at
least) 25 years. So hell yes, I used them.

But I couldn't get any help at all for medical and no help to pay my other
bills. Why? Because I don't have children or grandchildren. Shouldn't one
get credit for not popping out kid after kid after kid? They then have
other kids who are living off of and learning to live off the system. How
about set that money aside for scholarships?Don't put it in the hands of
people who abuse the system. A children's trust fund. Money allotted for
college. If they don't go to college, they don't get a dime. You don't
even have to have more than a dime.

If you've paid into the system I say certainly reap what you've sowed if you
need to. But don't continue to allow multi-generations to abuse it. (This
will be a very unpopular opinion.)

If you only worked for 5 months, sure. But if you worked for 18
months or more, you should get 26 weeks of unemployment. That's
6 *months*, not 6 *weeks.

Employees don't pay unemployment insurance - employers do.
Nothing at all comes out of your check for unemployment benefits.

Your federal taxes go to fund the USDA, who pays for your food
