The daughter of Masaad Ayoob was nearly assaulted once but had a gun and
had been trained to use it from at least as early of an age that I was
taught to use firearms. Her attacker turned and ran.

He mentions it in his books more than once.

Cellphones and 911 are nowhere near as fast as a bullet.

Peace? or carrying a piece. The fact is that more often than not, kids
(yes, even 18 year olds) may be volatile and unpredictable. I could trot
out stats on 'kids' that kill with guns; eg. school shootings etc. etc.; but
I won't.

Most times, yes... and for many reasons... I like the company, It
saves energy, I have someone to help in case of a flat tire or
whatever reason the motor conks out, but mostly because there is
safety in numbers. I'll drive the 3 1/2 miles into town myself (I
know most everyone in every house along the route and most everyone
knows me, I live in as rural a town as they come) and they all know my
vehicle, very conspicuous, I have the only Landcruiser for miles, two
tone jungle style no less, but when I go the 1/2 hour to hour drive to
a major town I always go with somebody... in fact in the four years
I've lived here I don't remember even once going further than into
town by myself. And it's no longer the same world I grew up in, to
wit, most every day there's an abduction. An ounce of prevention is
worth a ton of cure... I really don't want to discuss how to escape
(no weapon is going to be of any use when the perp gets the drop on
you, in fact it will probably get you killed sooner) thing is not to
get into that spot, and the best way is THE BUDDY SYSTEM.

And I grew up in Brooklyn, not many more streetwise than me, I can
literally smell a dirtbag from three blocks away... and that's why I
know what I'm talking about... the buddy system has nothing to do with
fear, has all to do with smart.

Anyway, I don't go far from home much anymore, in fact a whole month
can go by and I don't set a foot off this property... and that's
entirely out of choice... like today, I spent all day mowing my ten
acre lawn, and with my small tractor because the ground was too wet
to support the weight of my large tractor... and I chain sawed three
good sized trees that the recent storm took down... no matter, I
enjoyed a very productive day. Everyone driving by gve me as honk and
a wave. Please, don't allow your kids to go traipsing off alone...
there's nothing juvenile about the buddy system, it's the most mature
behaviour one can exhibit... even wild animals know that there is
safety in numbers.

couple of things at the grocery store or the pharmacy I wouldn't expect that
there would be a friend with nothing to do at that particular moment, ready
to accompany me. I drive into work alone and often stop on the way to run a
quick errand.

I always do look around for shady characters, and I like the point made by
another poster about not parking next to a van or truck.

Well not me! I would love to be able to arm myself but our laws are very
strict.

My daughter who lives in Germany came home on holiday once. At the airport
they discovered a spray in her bag, (which are legal in Germany) and they
gave her an awful time. Eventually they confiscated it and let her on her
way (back to Germany)

If it was not illegal, why did they take it? :-(

At the very least, you can arm yourself with pepper spray and a good
folding lock back knife. I'm not trained in knife combat, but it's
better than nothing.

The one I have has a belt clip. Clips nicely to the inside of my bra.

Would never try to get it thru an airport but I only fly if I HAVE to.

The pepper spray (small one) is on a keychain and there is a larger one
in my purse.

I am not. I do not want to live in Dodge City. Even Dodge Citians got
over that.

I believe that the effort ought to be to make the streets safe for
ordinary people, not turn every ordinary person into Dirty Harry. It can
be done, because most of the world is safer than the US. You'd have to
ask yourself why.
