"Ride assertively: communicate with other road users (e.g. hand signals, eye contact), anticipate hazards and conflicts, and take the space you need on the road to avoid them. Riding in the gutter is not 'safe' "

"You could drive to your local Asda or Safeway to do your weekly shop - but why not cycle? I tried this on a Saturday and found that most shopping centres provide bike racks where I could chain my mountain bike - much easier than searching for parking and cheaper too! Planning on going to a friend's house for a barbeque, or meeting mates at the pub? Skip the train - hop on your cycle and get some exercise, then spoil yourself (like I did!) with an extra kebab or pint. I was surprised at how quickly I reached my destination when I wasn't stopping at every train station."
