  1. I want to change the 52,42,30 chainrings I have to a 53,42,30. This is a
older bike I use indoors on a trainer with a 12-23 on the rear. It has
ultegra 9 drive train but a Suntour front der. I've tried it so far with
that but it slides into the 53 chainring rather than over it. Wondering if
maybe its reached its max t capacity. Would there be another front that
    would work? Any ideas?

    TIA

  2. it appears that upon further research that the shimano has only a 22t
capacity which I believe equals a 52t chainring. The campy systems have a
53t capacity. Could I sue a campy FD with the rest being shimano 9. I also
have this on a bike with shimano 9 bar end shifters which might be a
problem. Are there any mountain bike FD that would work?

Two things. One is that the difference between the 52 and the 53 is
insignificant. Why bother for such a small change in gearing? Most
shifts change the ratio by 10-15%, and you are talking about a change of
less than 2% in changing the chainrings.

Secondly, whether or not Shimano lists the capacity of 22 teeth versus
Campy's 23, either derailleur will work. Capacity limits are very
conservative -- and, again, the difference is insignificant. You will
need to adjust the height of the derailleur slightly to clear the big
ring, but that should take care of it.

Why did you trim the OP's typo ("should I sue my Campy FD..."😉 that prompted
    my facetious remark?

For those who aren't familiar, CPSC stands for the US Consumer
Protection Safety Commission. It was and is a well intended bureaucracy
designed to protect us from ourselves....

I remember when CPSC first started up in the mid 1970s. These were the
folks responsible for the black rubber caps on pro quality brake bolts
and nuts. They also caused Campy to change the beautiful tapered ringed
    cones on their QRs.

There were questions whether we could sell old stock Campy bikes and
components. Campy and other good quality bike brakes didn't meet the
CPSC standards while the kid killer department store bikes it was
designed to eliminate passed with flying colors!

I used to be some "Dy Yung" tires for kid's bike that were made in
    Taiwan or Korea. ;-)

Because it wasn't all that relevant to *my* facetious remark. (Take
any Campy manual and see how many times the phrase "an accident,
personal injury or death" occurs. Then again, I also weigh 82 kg/180 lbs
or more, so I'm pretty much screwed anyway.)

Get a Ultegra triple FD, the 6500 or 105, 9S, NOT the 10s one, which
will only work with a 39t middle ring, which will work great with your
shifters and the 53t/42/30. MTB FDs are not compatible with road
    shimano STI left shifters.

Did it shift well with the 52-42-30? If so, it should work with a 53
tooth ring. Did you remove the right crank when you swapped the ring?
    Did you re-install it properly?

Are you using Shimano STI shifters?

I would first try adjusting the front der limit screws. Then check the
    position of the front der.
    See:
    http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#front

Since this bike is only used on an indor trainer, you might try using a
downtube mounted shifter for the front der. That would give you more
    control than a "indexed" shifter.

You might also need to replace the Suntour der with a more compatible
    Shimano unit.

Have you remembered to adjust the height of the front derailleur?

One problem with braze-on front mechs and a big big ring can be that
the adjustment range of the braze-on doesn't go high enough, mine is
as far up as it goes and it barely clears the 53T ring.

  14. Depends a lot on the front derailleur. I have a Suntour XC Pro that
works quite reliably on a 54/34/24 touring triple. Helps to have very
    long chain stays.
