Today I had to take a train through Basingstoke.
For anyone who doesn't know, the station is often closed for engineering
at weekends which means no trains in the
Farnborough/Reading/Andover/Winchester area.
It has never been a problem to me as the replacement coaches always take
folding bikes - until today, on my return journey.
Ms Jobsworth decided that a Brompton was a 'Bike' and its "No bikes".
Despite protestations by the SWT Asssistant, she was adamant. While
loading cases which were twice the size of the Brommie, she repeated "No
bikes, and 'that's' a bike".
She drove her coach off.
The Assistant got the Station Manager, who came down and spoke to me.
He was pleasant and very concerned that a folding bike had been refused.
He promised I could go on the next coach (1hr later) and that if the
driver was "awkward", he would give me a bin-bag, explaining that's the
way cyclists got around the 'Southern ban'.
It seems that while SWT had contracted various coach companies to
replace the train services, it is still up to the bus drivers themselves
how they provide that service :-(
And we all know about bus drivers :-(
And the coach company? Assisi Travel from Salisbury.
