There's a section of road near here with several traffic islands. Not
only is it notorious for speeding but it seems that many motorists here
seem to think that the 2 seconds saved on their journey to the back of
the next queue is worth risking the lives of cyclists by squeezing them
at these islands. In fact one of them scared the life out of me last
week as he miscalculated and ended up skidding to a halt right next to
me and almost hitting the bollard.
Anyway, today they've installed one of those displays which tells
speeders how fast they are going and to slow down. Of the admittedly
small number of motorists I saw on my journey going past this sign, it
didn't seems to make any difference to their driving. Is there any
evidence that they actually do any good or are they just a waste of
money?
