  1. You can no longer buy veal in Atlanta. The animal rights people have wiped
out a significant sector of our cusine.

Does anyone have a suggestion for buying veal on the Internet?

I have a lot of Austrian reicpes waiting!

Please cite an article!!! I couldn't find one on the AJC!

  3. The butcher at Toco Hills Publix told me. Kroger doesn't have veal either.
It has been missing from both stores for 4 or 5 months.

Call the city's health department and ask. Although that department would
probably NOT be involved with enforcement of such a law, they're certainly
around restaurant owners enough that they would've heard comments if it were
    true.

I just called the first two publics on the list from zipcode 30308. Both
the Piedmont Ave. and Plaza Midtown stores in Atlanta. Both had veal in
    one form or another!

It's not an animal rights issue, it's just yours!

While you're at it, can you find me some geoduck clams in Austin?
    TIA!

When he's done with that, send him here. I want the interior of my car

Allen Brothers has good meat, although expensive. But do you really want
to eat veal? Raised the traditional way it is indeed delicious but this
is one place where the animal rights people have a good point. The way
that traditional milk-fed veal is raised is truly cruel. Then there is
the pastured free range veal where the critters are not mistreated but
why bother - meat from calves raised this way is uninteresting.

    Steve,

No geoclams in Austin today. 😉

YIKES! What an ugly creature! Thanks for the education!

"As Food: The neck can be cut or ground and used in chowders. The body
meat, when sliced, pounded and sautéed it resembles abalone. Although
they are edible, they are not widely marketed due to their
inaccessibility. They are exposed for only a few hours a month, during
minus tides, and even then only a very fast person digging with a shovel
can attempt to dig out this fast burrowing clam. (Note: sport limits for
the state of Washington are three per day)"

There is probably veal around, just not milk fed white veal. Which I
agree is animal cruelty just like foi gras.

Did you call Eaves Brothers Quality Seafood?

Nothing like a prhistoric, 140 year old clam for dinner, eh?

These are almost always available live at 99 Ranch 99 markets.

Not yet. 😉 Do they live along the gulf coast shoreline?

It would have to be chowder but I don't think I could watch it being
    made.

Does Austin have a sizeable Asian community? If so, look for an Asian

We have 2 or 3 decent Chinese/Vietnamese grocers, but never any
    geoducks that I've seen. I've bought a couple 3lb-ers at 99 Ranch
    in Cupertino.

Why is it cruel? Because you are eating something before it was
weaned? As long as it was killed quickly, I have no problem with it.

Rich almost got one, but the tide started coming in too quickly and
he got buried in water, and it got away.

Traditionally, the animals are locked in tiny pens, unable to move for the
entire time they're alive. Were you aware of that? Have you ever seen the
    containers used for veal calves?

  20. Quoted message said:

    Why is it cruel?

    1. Because they are force fed. They never get mothers milk after they
    can stand.
    2. Because they are kept in restraint 24/7 and not allowed to move,
    not even a step side/side or forward/back.
