I buried my sister-in-law on January 7th, 2006, who died of lung cancer
after a brief 4 months of daily radiation and chemo therapy. She was my
favorite relative! I wish she'd died being struck by lightning instead!
She was 48 years old. My age! One day short of her 49th birthday.

I looked at the kids at the "Jam on the River" today who smoked and just
wish they knew better.

I was having lunch with my boss at the Reading Terminal Market in
Philadelphia and two beautiful women sat at a table next to us. We
struck up a conversation. They were on grand jury duty lunch break. The
one who smoked was just my type! I felt an attraction, IYKWIM. We talked
and ate and drank and out of nowhere (actually after she'd lit up for
the third time), I looked her straight in the eye and said "You'd look
so much more adorable if you didn't smoke!" It was a moment frozen in
time, so-to-speak. She thought it over for a second and replied "Thank
you." realizing it was a compliment. I hope she quit. She was a DOLL!

No sympathy is called for. I just wanted to gripe. And announcing
the termination of a bad habit is a good way to force oneself to a
real commitment, I've found.

I know the feeling, Andy, I get it when I look at young people. I wonder if
they felt the same for me when they saw me smoking at a young age.

My mom died at age 48, too, of cancer; not of lung cancer, but she did
smoke. So young.

cartons of Benson Hedges for the Chinese as they are big smokers. I ended
up having a smoke with them, and when I returned, I bought a couple of
cartons for myself and started smoking again for a couple of years. But
after that, I was finished with it.
I think there is a time when you know for sure that it's over.
