I just watched it and the kid *was* yelling, "You're not my dad, somebody
help me!" People looked, but did not act, until two guys stepped up
and then a bunch of people started act. The two things I get from this
are that there are a lot of blended families these days and a kid might
indeed just be a brat and say to her step-father, "you're not my dad,"
and if one person starts to act others who kind of want to do something
will follow.
Thus the combination of "you're not my mom" AND "you're a stranger".
Hopefully a combination thatw ill perk up someone's ears.

Fortunately, despite what TV "news" programs would have us believe,
stranger abduction is really very rare. I'm not saying it doesn't
happen, just not as much as you might think if you watch a lot of
television. Most missing kids are taken by estranged parents.
Well, there has been a rash of freaks hanging out and harassing kids
before and after school, on the walk home or at the bus stop, this
school year. At least 8 of them in our district since fall. (Va Beach.
As a teacher, we hear about each and every one of them and have to warn
the kids. Mostly midle-school targets. Not all for abduction, but we've
had a flashing or two as well.)
And many other childrenare taken by uncles, babysitters, etc - close
friends/family, but not the parents.
But the point is, she knows to yell this phrase no matter what the
siuation. She's 9, and old enough to understand that people may be
hesitant to step in - she's had more than her fair share of public
temper tantrums - and she knows that "youre a stranger" could be key
words to people who might otherwise turn a blind eye.
Besides, it's the best I could come up with. I'll gladly take any
better suggestions!
PS, I'd love it if her Dad cared enough to want to baduct her. (sick
joke.) He hasn't seen her sice Thanksgiving, plans to see her for just
under a week in July and then god know when after that. Calls her for
about 15 minutes once a week. NOT one I'd worry about kidnapping her; I
have a hard enough time trying to convince him to fulfill more than
one-tenth of his vistiation rights as it is!
