Well i have gone anywhere up to 1700kms on the michelins before puncturing - not bad in my books!

fantastic! I've been telling all the shops around here that everyone is starting to buy from Probikekit. Maybe the shops will get together with the importers to sort out the outrageous Aus retail tyre prices.

Outrageous Aussie tyre prices...

have a look at the sidewall- Made in Taiwan.
Tyres are bulky and are a very unusual shape (unless they are the folding type) so freight cost is a major factor.
Although I think the very expensive folding ones should be about half the price
and I will keep buying those ones from ProbikeKit unless aussie bike shops start charging reasonable prices.

AND......I am happy a non-American started this thread so the word was spelt correctly.
Sick of seeing the word "Tires"..this is rubbish.

I got them (Red Michie Pro Race) off the local Tri Forum Bulletin Board, one new, one about 10 hours on a trainer. These were "Made in France". 🙂

I tire of seeing Tyre miss-spelt too. :eek:

What a disadvantage the LBS has, 10% GST to start with. [My commodore tyres would cost about $3000 each lb for lb compared to bicycle tyres]

Bicycle Recycle sells heaps of 2nd hand bikes, and they often sometimes get a bunch of new tyres thrown in with bike trade-ins, so these are the only 'super' bargains I get.

What I find outrageous is the AMAZING descrepancy between the prices. Cecil Walker are one of the cheapest shops around (compare their 10sp Dura-Ace crank-set price: $537), yet their $98 Pro Race price tag is MORE THAN DOUBLE Probikekit!! Crikey!! :p Also, as I've said elsewhere, I can get an Open Pro or CXP33 at my LBS for less than $98! I'm aware than tyres such as the Pro Race or an Open Corsa are supposed to be the Pirelli (are they still the most expensive?🙂) of bike tyres, but I still can't get over the fact that a tyre can cost as much as a good rim 🙂

road training: vredstein tricomps (had conti attack and force - most overrated, underperforming tyre ever)

mtb race: maxxis larsen tt exception (standard, made tubeless with stan's)
mtb train: hutchinson python gen 2 (UST, with stan's)

Most tyres I have purchased have Made in Taiwan on them. Even tyres with italian-sounding names. But Probikekit is much cheaper on everything in general, not just tyres. Local Bike Shops (which I presume is the meaning of the "LBS" acronym) have overheads such as staff wages, lease on premises, etc etc. They have to make a living and I sometimes feel a bit guilty about boycotting their business, but I am not Donald Trump and if I can save some $$$...anyways there's enough Tri-hard-athletes 😎 with huge disposable incomes, willing to buy stuff in an LBS....

Conti ultra gator skins for me. 25s on both the fixie and the tourer. Glad I'm not down under, tyre prices seem ridiculous. Do you have a levy to finance that annoyingly good track squad of yours?😄

I'm all for supporting the local shop; my beef is purely with tyre prices! Oh, and knicks: over $150 for a bit of lycra and a chamois??!! CARMON!! :p I reckon we're getting totally ripped on these 2 fast-wearing items.
Think about it: A HUNDRED BUCKS FOR A BIKE TYRE that I'd be lucky to get 2,500km out of on the rear!!!!

Other items don't bother me so much. For eg, I'm thinking about getting some new Dura-Ace cranks, which I can get on Probikekit for $412 (on special, but they're not there this week), and at my local shop for $500. I'm happy to pay $500 for them at my local shop because the discrepancy is not as MASSIVE as the tyre price disrepancy, and I obviously don't buy cranks every month

Just had a look at my michelins from probikekit - definately MADE IN FRANCE - just liket he ones at the LBS!

Why is it that the LBS cant do it for AUD35 instead of the $95 shafting we cop from them. i am sure its probably a combination of our government taxes, and michelin Aus trying to choke the golden goose and unfortunately its the shop that suffers by doing less business!

i am all for supporting local businesses, but you just cant justify spending nearly 3 times as much for bike gear. as a result 80% of the gear i buy is online!

I got a Hutch Reflex on the rear recently and am pretty impressed with being puncture resistant and riding well. Previously I had F/R Hutch Excels and those were horrible as far as slicing, cutting and puncturing. I originally got them 'cause they're french and I figured my Peugeot would be happier with them. Oh [censored], now I'm dating my equipment. OK, out with it... 1983 peugeot PH-11 with helicomatic freewheel system, and 6 speed cluster, and I am pretty happy with it.

Well spotted, however, the chap that got the Michies experienced 3 flats yesterday, so 3 Conti tubes, ouch$$. We went into Runners World in the afternon and he bought their last 2 Conti Ultra Gator Skins with Kevlar, more tubes and retaped his rims. See how he goes on todays ride. 🙄

Those Michie Pro Race give a magic ride buy they are real glass magnets. :eek: Do you want to buy them, they are red?

Hutch must of lifted there game. I had been told by those who had used them previously that they got too many punctures.
