Usenet just isn't Usenet when there is a moderator.

However, participants in this newsgroup can probably reduce the flaming
if they choose to use the proper channels to complain about those
anonymous posters who only have axes to grind. Looking these characters
up on Google and seeing their past history of posting usually helps one
make this determination.

If you had conscientious moderators who would quickly pass through questions
from newcomers looking for help that would be OK. I'm not sure of the
mechanics of how to make such a thing happen.

I wish the people involved in these flame wars would realize that there are
only two sets of people that read this stuff. 1. The people involved in the
flame war. 2. Those who are not - usually new people looking for help and
trying to figure out what this group is all about.

That's really the unfortunate thing. People may be seeking help and are
repelled by what they see. It's sad because of the lost potential.

If it is a matter of who gets the last word in a flame war, could that not be
done via Email?

I don't have any problems with the newsgroup anymore. I just use a good
KillFile (Fix News {it's free}) and soon as I see the silly stuff ..I
just kill the sender .. [censored] .. soon as another one pops up .. away they
go ! and I'm back to about 80% real stuff ! I consider this newsgroup
just too valuable to let that back and forth childish patter run me off
!

I have more items in my Agent killfilter from this newsgroup in the
last few months than I had in it from the previous 8 years, for all
the other newsgroups combined. This morning I downloaded 49 posts for
this group. After the filter raked over the crud, I had 14 left to
read. 🙂

Because most posts are archived, there are all sorts of people who will
eventually read everything posted.

Yes, they choose to be and to remain "lurkers."

And, if they have a cardiology type question, they are more likely to email a
cardiologist rather than post their query here.

I just use the old fashioned "ignore them" strategy. You don't HAVE to read
the posts for every header in the group. Killfiling a sender only works
until someone replies to that sender....then you get the reply, usually with
the original post stuck in there somewhere. Unless you killfile the
respondant, then you're okay until a third person gets in on it...

You may even miss on-topic posts by killfiling individuals. Dr Chung has a
tendancy to respond to most of the flamebait that's dangled in front of him,
usually feeling the need to defend his character. It is, of course, his
right to defend himself. However, the only way to get rid of all the excess
threads is by killfiling Dr Chung, and then you would miss the good
information he provides when responding to an actual cardiology topic.

Some killfiles let you remove cross-posted headers. Again, you'd miss the
occasional honest question by someone posting both here and sci.med, say.
You can kill (or ignore) an entire thread, but the subjects change so much
that you're still adding things to your filter every day.

No, I say the best way to handle it is to simply ignore the trolls. They
will eventually go away.

ps: I may have an advantage in that I have cable-internet so it takes only a
split second to download the headers. I know that for dial-up it's a pain to
download useless headers.
