  1. that title is for JD's benefit.

me, just another frustrated anal retentive type. On our ride last weekend, my bike mileage came up
about 1.75 short as to what Mr. Adventure came up with on the GPS. His device was tracking poorly in
areas due to tree coverage, but even after I adjusted the GPS track on the computer so it was more
true to route, the odometer was still way off. Normally we've been with in a tenth or two of each
    other, all summer long.

So I recheck the tire settings, aargh, 2 mm off in the A setting (which I have been using) and 7 mm
off in the B setting which is the low speed/mtb one I just read that I should be using in the
manual. The worst thing is all those stupid buttons... after trying to get the B setting correct for
1/2 an hour I gave up. ( I have done the math for how much error those variations will give you,
something like 1/10 of a mile after 100 miles...)

Why do I care anyway? Well..... today's total reading is 938 miles, since last July. My goal for the
summer was 500 and I am way past that as I started at 300 this spring. But oh, that rollover to 1K!
What a moment to strive for, that's some landmark, for me at any rate. It's going to make me crazy
    thinking that it's off somewhere.

Ahh, my Avocet 40, got it on my road bike, and have had it for almost 10 years. 2 buttons, 6
functions. Idiot proof. Which is good for me. I've got an Avocet 15, (25?) I forget now, on my SS,
and with even fewer functions it's even easier to operate. MPH and distance traveled are all I
    need to know.

1,000 miles is a landmark, great job!

  3. You can do better then that mileage from July to July. I've been riding for a week since recovering
from a snapped collarbone. The odometer reads 50.8 miles. No pain no gain. I know you don't have the
time with the family and all. Well I've got 2 jobs and still have time to ride.

Apparently! I just slapped mine on & didn't set anything. I know it reads a few percent off, but
its no big deal. Besides, that few percent makes it look like I've gone *more* than I have, so its
a bonus! I guess my odometer should really only ready about 2250 miles instead of ~2350 (still way
less than you, since that's over a ~6-year period). Amazing how those small percentages add up
    over time.

Its just a cheapo unit anyway. I can't see spending a lot of money for something that is just for
curiosity's sake. I think I appreciate them more when I'm riding some road sections (so I know how
soon they'll end). One of thse days I'll get one for my second bike, which is now the
    road/fireroad bike.

Who said "A man with two watches never knows what time it is."? But anyway, congrats on nearly
reaching 1K and less so for keeping one of those little plastic POS working for that long. I gave up
long ago trying and just ride without one.

yes me bad and annoying for being so anal. As I let go of attempting to control the uncontrollable

Dude, I don't think it's a contest. As my dad is fond of saying, "Nobody here's going to the

I can definitely relate to what you're going through. I just love to know how many miles ridden,
riding time, max speed, average speed, ad nauseum. It took quite a bit of will power to not put a
computer on my new Kona. But I think the dorkiness of one on a long travel FR/DH helped me out. :-)

For some reason I never look at my odos. My RH Comp FS doesn't even have a computer on it. My main
reason for the comps is trip distance.

Ever few months I take my GPS with me on a Garmin bike mount next to odometer. I have 7 bikes all
with Cat eye enduro 2's.(big sale last year) There is less than .1 difference on any one of them
that are checked with GPS on a 20 mile ride. Putting more air in tires seems to help keep them
accurate. So try and borrow a GPS and check your odometer against that. If nothing else it makes you
feel better. Any more 70 year olds on this list? Jerry

the differneces we had between odo and gpos have to do with poor sattelite tracking udner heavy
conver on the gps, plus a trail that pretty much swithcbacked on itself for a very ppor track
    reading. (problem solved, gps based)

That's why the only thing that is really important is that you ride your bicycle and have fun.
Having all of that junk to obsess over takes the fun out of it for too many.

It's kind of funny but the only thing that I use my cheap ass NASHBAR computer for is to keep track
of the time (I hate wearing a watch when I ride). Speed and distance are really kind of irrelevant
(unless you're planning an E&E route!). My trip usually goes something like this..... I have a 4
hour window to get a ride in that means I can do 1.5 hours in and
1.5 hours out and leave time to SSS before soccer practice (or Cub Scouts or whatever....).

Precisely. I've got one on my road bike, whose speed is important. I don't/won't have one on my
