  1. A recently published study from a university in Western Australia
    indicates that ten minutes of massage, a half-hour after heavy
    eccentric resistance training:

    [1] Significantly reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS);
    [2] Significantly reduces plamsa creatine kinase (CK) levels; and
    [3] Significantly reduces inflammatory response (swelling).

    No significant difference in recovery time, though. It just makes it
    hurt less in the meantime.

    Yes, but even more of a concern is that we are talking only'short' quips.

    Interesting - it's been discussed here many times that not much of
    anything works with DOMS except maybe contrast baths but this has
    always felt wrong to me. The perceived benefit of massage seemed much
    too much to be purely psychological.

    I wonder how many people that post here actually do heavy eccentric
    resistance training as part of their workouts? Equally, I wonder how
    many of the same people even consider, or have the time for massage,
    as part of their regular fitness routines?

    effect or an uncertain effect. Although plasma CK is a
    less-than-perfect marker for trauma from eccentric exercise, it does
    show some quantifiable physiological effect.

    Here's the thing: apparently no one even knows exactly what causes
    DOMS? Supposedly multi-factorial which makes things harder again. How
    reliable can physiological studies BE when then don't really know what
    to look for?

    Maybe there is a good case with DOMS for "if it feels good, do it". As
    (again, presumably) DOMS has little to no correlation with actual
    recovery per se, then its main drawback is the (perceived) soreness
    which can make working out difficult. Ergo anything that helps reduce
    the (perceived) soreness has to be a good thing?

    No?

    ....or, hmmm, is DOMS nature's way of telling us to quit bugging a
    muscle for a while? Maybe reducing the pain whilst not actually doing
    anything to enhance recovery is a bad thing?
