Quoted message said:I lost my lifting gloves the other day. Asking for them at the Lost &
Found, I described them like this: they used to be white but they're kind
of a greyish-brown now. They're torn and the velcro doesn't stick and the
fingers are all sort of frazzled.
The clerk looked at me and I realized I really needed to buy new lifting
gloves.
So I went in a store yesterday, ostensibly shopping for Christmas presents
for other people, and bought myself a new pair of gloves. They aren't
lifting gloves, though, they're bike-riding gloves. I loved the way they
made my hands feel - all happy - but when I went to the gym this morning
I'm just [censored] at the padding and how it sort of caught on the bar.
I need new gloves. (I guess I'll just have to use the cycling gloves for
cycling.)
Anyone got any suggestions? I like elastic or mesh backs - I don't like
my hands to get too hot. I mostly like the padding inside the thumb. I
wear them mostly so I won't get splinters from the friggin ancient iron as
well as to avoid dust & rust and not get my hand lotion on the iron.
(Girly-girl weightlifting problems - possibly too chick-oriented for you
macho men.)
I'll have to mail order it, since my small town can't offer me a better
choice that cycling gloves.
Ideas?
I know that my suggestion may be scorned by both the macho and sissy
contingents. But here goes.
I tried many of the so called training gloves. They had leather palms, some
padding, a velcro closer, chopped off fingers and an open (or mesh) backs.
They all became stiff and uncomfortable for me. Rather quickly too.
In desperation, while shopping at a big nursery for garden supplies, I
bought some garden variety work gloves. They were simple brown cotton
gloves. They had many little bumps on the palm and inside fingers of some
kind of flexible, rubber like material. Obviously to add in gripping
slippery surfaces.
These worked perfect for me. They were cheap, readily available and lasted
for years. The little bumps on the palms and fingers provided just enough
of a padding effect. I did not like the padding. It also protected me from
the occasional rust stain.
And, perhaps the most important feature, they provided a sure, slipfree grip
on all my movements. If I was pulling something that taxed my grip strength,
these gloves added to my ability.
It is a total minimalist approach. And it worked very well for me. I
picked up two more pair the other day at the dollar store. And I have no
problem buying expensive gear. I just did not feel the conventional workout
gloves helped me that much.
This simple solution was my answer for a functional workout glove.
YMMV
