  1. I've been spending a lot of time looking for the perfect spiced peanuts
recipe. This is the latest recipe I tried:

    http://www.hugs.org/Beer_Snack_Nuts.shtml

Now, I think I remember my dad bringing BEER NUTS home from the bar.
What I remember is peanuts with a lumpy candy shell, a red candy coating
with, presumably, the lumps caused by the coarse salt.

All the so-called clone recipes call for the sugar/peanuts/water mixed
to be cooked until dry. I did that, following the recipe above. But it
wasn't what I remember. The coating crystallized, like fudge that was
stirred. The result wasn't a crunchy candy coating, but a crystallized
sugary thing. It was good, as far as it went, but not what I was looking
for. Was it because I stirred the mixture too much? Should I have just
left it to cook itself dry, without stirring?

Sounds like French Burnt Peanuts, AKA Boston Baked Beans without
    the lumps.

Run, don't walk, to your local drug store. Look in the snack aisle. They
    sell cans of BEER NUTS.

Apolgies beforehand, Sunshine, but I'm finding it difficult to contain
my anger at the sheer butt-headed stupidity of your post. Has it ever
crossed your pea-brain that not every participant in this discussion
group lives in the US? I, for one, left the US some 15 years ago. I have
to make do with what's available in my country of choice.

Stirring is not necessary while it's boiling but I don't see why it
would matter. If you try this recipe again, add 1/4 cup or so of maple
syrup to the mixture. That might move it closer to the candy coating
    you remember. -aem

Those are just Spanish peanuts. If you'd read his post you'd see
that he was speaking of something completely different.

I think I agree. What you describe is not the way I remember Beer Nuts. I
recall beer nuts as having a sweet/salty, thin, non-lumpy coating. The red
    bumpy ones were burnt peanuts.

You don't have drug stores or stores with snack aisles in your country of
choice? Hmmm, I'd consider a different country, then.

Has it ever crossed your pea-brain to state where the hell you live before
soliciting information on something that specific? If it weren't the whole
product, it could be an ingredient, and no one know what you have available
    where you live.

Sounds like he was looking for help on a recipe, not a place to
buy them. Hopefully, armed with the more common name of the
product (French Burnt Peanuts), he can find some help with the
    recipe.

Good thing he described it. Beer Nuts aren't even remotely related to
    French Burnt Peanuts.

Beer nuts are (at least originally) Spanish peanuts - skin on -
with a very light sweet/salty glaze. They are not "candy coated".

Very lightly glazed would be a better word. They're not candy-
    coated at all.

Well, yet again I've learnt something new from RFC. You can buy something
called "beer nuts" here (NSW, Australia), but they don't have any sort of
coating on them. They're just roasted, salted peanuts still in their red
    skins.

A candy coated beer nut sounds odd to me <g> as I wouldn't usually think
of something sweet as going with beer. Or is the candy coating not very
sweet? Are they actually meant to be eaten with beer?
