website for MFW and let it go head to head with the Usenet version. I
personally think that a fairly implemented /code version of MFW has a

It's a news proxy. It sits between the client program (e.g. Agent) and the
news server.

That wouldn't work anyway -- because you really want to be able to filter on

good enough. There aren't that many sources of noise, and most of them could
be put down with one or two filter rules. For example, a troll on a broadband
provider could be filtered with a single IP address rule.

Why? Couldn't you just make the webserver host a publicly accessable
MySQL server in read only mode? Then the data could be simply kept in

I understand what you are trying to say here, but my provider told me
explicitly that when I power cycle my modem I get a new ip. Isn't this a
bit of a hang up. I realize that my modem is prolly going to request the
same ip address again, and if it is available there is a good chance I
get it, but three or four power cycles in a row can cause you to hop
numbers, no?

Of course something that works like

iptables -A INPUT -s 10.0.0.1/254 -i eth0 -d 192.168.1.1 -p TCP -j DROP

except for filtering messages on a proxy program could probably be made
to work where "10.0.0.1/254" is a provider's block of ip addresses for a
given server. Only draw back would be if the person in question had say
a next door neighbor that wasn't considered a plague.

There is only one demon that I have filtered on this group, and even the
folks who are pointing troll accusations at one another agree that he is
bad news. All the others I choose to ignore when warranted, and read
other times. So my contribution/involvement in all of this is really
only out of my own curiousity of how things like this are made to work.
