Ya know, I have no idea.. But I think it would be a great addition,
along with the link to mIRC... and the way to find the chat room.
I wish I could provide the link, but I don't use it myself: I use
mIRC.

It is supposed to be on the "Unofficial" rec.food.cooking Web site,
which *is* referenced in the FAQ as follows:
11 "Unofficial" rec.food.cooking Web site
Damsel in dis Dress used to maintain what many people regarded as the
'unofficial' rec.food.cooking site, with sections devoted to rfc chat,
rfc 'signature' dishes, rfc cook-in reports and rfc birthdays. John
Gaughan is currently in charge of the site, which is located at
http://www.recfoodcooking.org/.
The site, however, does not contain any chat info and it appears that it
has been abandoned by its maintainer, as it hasn't been updated in quite
some time and the maintainer is in an incommunicado mode. I wish Damsel
would put up her Web site again... or else that someone else would host
and maintain the recfoodcooking.org site...
I could put both the Web and the direct IRC link in the FAQ, but I would
be reluctant to provide a link to mIRC, as it is a Windows-only client
and I then would have to also provide links to such Mac clients as Snak,
Ircle and Colloquy, and to *nix clients, such as IrcII, [censored], EPIC,
Xchat and KVIrc. While I know some Mac clients and can be reasonably
held responsible for my recommendations, I'm only very slightly familiar
with the purely text-based IrcII and not at all with any of other *nix
clients. Someone else would have to provide the info.

I can try to salvage what used to be on the site. So much of it was
changed ... I may have to start from scratch, and that's not in the
works for some time to come. I've forgotten most of the html I used
to know.
My hope is that we'll find someone who has more than just a passing
interest in the site, as well as the time, knowledge, and energy to
devote to it.

Victor, spoke to DH. He is quite prepared to host and maintain the
recfoodcooking.org site on one of our servers. He is out at the moment,
but will check tonight if he can get the info on the current "owner" and
see about taking it over... Would that suit you?

I'd be willing to do it, but it would have to wait for 2-3 weeks until I
finish formatting my HD and I switch ISPs...

It would indeed suit *me* perfectly, but I'm really not the right person
to ask. Apart from putting in a reference to the recfoodcooking.org in
the FAQ, I have absolutely nothing to do with it. AFAIK, the only one
who has access to the site is John Gaughan, the maintainer. The
"recfoodcooking.org" name is at least nominally registered to and by
John Robinson. He initially registered it all by himself, but the
renewal was paid for by some rfc volunteers who collected the money,
IIRC. I think Barb knows all the details. I'm sure both Johns will be
ready to give the site to someone else and the only problem is actually
contacting them. John Gaughan's e-mail address is on the
recfoodcooking.org site; John Robinson's can be found by doing a whois
search on recfoodcooking.org, or else Barb probably can help.

Hi Victor,
We have found the "whois" info. There is a contact phone number and and
an email address for John Robinson... we have sent him an email to find
out if he is prepared to let us take over, if that fails we will try to
phone.... Looks like the domain is paid up until 21 June 2006. BTW, by
"Barb", do you mean Barb Schaller? If so, will drop her a line and see
if she can help.
If we can't contact Mr Robinson, the other option is to register another
(similar) domain name and use that... but its not ideal - any
suggestions/comments?

When you have time to spare, give us a ring.... I bet the job will be
open based on the time constraints most people have these days.

I heard from John Gaughan in June. At that time he said he was
considering upgrading the site to a Wiki.
I mailed him two weeks ago that you might be looking for him.
Because I collected and sent the money to him for domain name
registration, I have John Robinson's home address. We're paid up until
somewhere around April-June 2006.
You want me to do something with the information?

Well, if John Gaughan can somehow be contacted and persuaded to update
the recfoodcooking.org site and to keep doing it, then no change is
needed, as far as I'm concerned. If not, John Robinson will have to be
contacted, so that he could set the DNS to the IP of someone else who
would be prepared to adopt and maintain it, for example to Cathy or
Jani.
And, not that this is important, especially at this stage, but I have
some general reservations regarding Wiki. It is a useful concept in
that it allows users to add their own content to a Web site that is not
their own. For example, people could add their birthdays to the rfc
birthdays page or a link to cook-in photos on the rfc cook-ins page
without having to contact the maintainer first. On the other hand, the
very concept positively invites abuse.

And, of course, John can retain the registration if he wants, as long as
you get to actually use the domain name.

This has been discussed last time. Damsel suggested
chaotic-kitchen.org, IIRC. Since "chaotic kitchen" has been in the rfc
logo ever since the T-shirt project, it passes very well indeed.

Victor/Barb,
We had a tentative reply to our initial email inquiry about the site
from John Robinson... think he wants to make sure we are "genuine" -
don't blame him. Told him to have a look at this thread, so we will have
to wait and see what what he thinks/says about the situation. Will let

Agreed. There was an article in the local (?) paper recently about how
the Wikipedia information isn't to be trusted without lots of other
research - apparently, it's popular for students who are writing papers
to consult Wikipedia.

I would be extremely hesitant to use it at this time. I have no experience
with it, but just from reading posts in some of the computer groups I read,
I would not want it on my website, provided I ever get it going 🙂 It
is a very definite catalyst for abuse. Just my 2cents and I'll leave the
thread gracefully now.
