  1. I remembered you mentioned you had considered The Hairy Gorilla Half
Marathon. If you hadn't looked at the race site lately they've changed
the location, it's now in Thatcher Park. The Pinebush Commission changed
their permit and were only going to allow 75 total runners. I'm all for
conservation but these people are taking it too far.

Thatcher Park is beautiful but a lot more challenging.

Thanks for the heads up. 75 is a bit thin, so may be full by now(?). I'm
tempted even though I've already chosen 2 other races upcoming soon. Not
sure my legs are ready to race hard for ~2 hours right now.

They changed it to Thatcher Park because of the limit if they had it in
the Pinebush, so I don't think it will fill or if there is a stated limit.

I'm approaching very conservatively, it will be the longest trail race
I've ever run. I'm sure it can't be any harder than a road 1/2 though. 🙂
Maybe CP should come up and do it as a tune up!

I knew you had been intersted in the Indian Ladder Trail Run in there in
    the summer.

Thanks for thinkin' of me, Parker, but timing issues aside, a suitable
tuneup for NYCM would be more like a Western States or a Hardrock. And
throw in Badwater to train for potential Indian summer weather. ;-)

Why do they call it the Hairy Gorilla anyway? To discourage or
disparage the tri's with their shaved legs?

Pendejo, who may be a city boy but is pretty sure upstate NY is not a
    major habitat of actual gorillas

You got me, this group has something going on with animals.
There is a six mile race also, "The Squirrely Six" and they have a 5k in
the spring called "Dodge the Deer".

I was corrected when I suggested that they have Ben & Jerry's Chunky
Monkey for post race food. Gorillas are not monkeys!

I know there is a web page that tracks pedophiles. Has anyone looked to

Yea hard to say how hard. For me the a HM would be a more difficult course,
no matter how rough the trail, because of the monotony of action of
flat-running muscles, and also that the blood cells killed by the pounding
of the feet will be greater in a road race than on anything softer. But...
certain joints/tendons may take a greater beating in the Hairy. For equal
effort, the Gorilla would be harder 'cause it will run a bit longer.

If I run it, it's a big unknown how much endurance I'll have. My last two 2
HRish runs have been sluggish at the end, going slow, the reach of the 50
miler from a month ago perhaps. That won't deter me, though how I feel after
    today's run may.

...if it's a new course how do you know the fatigue factor connected
with the course? i looked at the site...they're encouraging people to
wear costumes,...and there's a prize category for it...no? they also
have a prize category for the person that finishes the race carrying
the most bananas. and the race is limited to 75 runners?
is this a race or a farce? give me a break...oh you trail guys are

do you trail guys ever give any consideration at all to the field of
    runners?

if i'm healthy mid-way through november i'm going to enter a trail run
just to be able to be able to talk my [censored] to you guys and back it with
at least one crumb of experience. ok, ok...for now you can say i am
talking out of my ass and don't know what i am talking about. fair
enough. i'm hoping to be in running shape in about a month for a 15K
Trail Run. Something called the "Dirty Bird" in Reading, PA. $25 seems
a little steep to me for a country run in the woods...what's the deal
    with that?

300 runners also strikes as rather smallish however...I gotta get a

me a city boy wimp, etc. and good lord, don't let me be a top

The *was* going to be capped at 75 because of parking issues from the
previous year. These places don't have subway access. Depending on
the design of the first few miles of the course, 300 could be too much.

I did one trail race...my wife and I were on our honeymoon in Crested
Butte, CO. We found out about a run at the end of the week on the 401
trail, basically 4 miles uphill on a steep fire road, and 5 miles down
on twisty singletrack, at about 10-12,000ft. It was hard, but
everything is if you make it so. It could have been harder, for me, if
it was at sea level, or if it was flatter, or if it was downhill, then
uphill. I wasn't running much at the time, but had good fitness from
biking, and had 5 nights of altitude acclimation. The way these
factors balanced out, it made me feel aerobically limited uphill (I had
more than enough muscle) and on the downhill I used up all that muscle
by mile 8 or so from the pounding.

It was fun though. I got 4th. I figure you'll have a great time
frontrunning it and getting top 20. I figure it will be a lot like a
mountain bike race... you want to go hard on the start to get into the
singletrack (if there is any) in front of the crowds and then hang on.
You might get frustrated when the trail and the crowd doesn't let you
use your speed if you don't get out early, and if you do get out early,
you might get frustrated by the fade you'll feel when the reaper comes
    to collect his oxygen debt.

The course is new but it is run on the same trails as two races that
have been run for several years every Summer. This isn't The Escarpment
Trail but it's not easy. There is one long uphill which will be in the
middle of race and a smaller but decent uphill early in the race. No to
mention the downhills, I don't ant to think about them!
there isn't a 75 runner limit. The race was moved from it's original
location because NYS DEC decided to impose a 75 runner limit.
If you think these guys are wimps, FYI one of them finished 7th at the
Escarpment Trial this summer. Another ran 3:05 at the local Marathon on
Oct 9th. He then went to CT 2 weeks later and ran 3:00 on a more
difficult course. He'll be head south for the JFK 50 miler next month.
If you want to get an idea of the difficulty a friend of mine who won
    the women's 15k two years ago ran 7:32 pace. She's a 2:56 marathoner,
3:17 in Boston 2 years ago when it was 85F.

What's the matter with having some fun? I have to give these people a
lot of credit, the core of this club are college students and recent
graduates. They've done a lot to promote trail and road running in the
area. I think the animal themes are meant to attract kids to running by
    the way.

  13. oh i'm just ribbing you guys on a friday, someone's got to mix it up
    around here sometimes..zzzzzzzzz

but seriously, it's a bad idea to have this race where it now is. why?
it can't grow. not that you want something that's going to grow to
be as big as the Bay To Breakers in SF and 80,000+ people....but when a
race must be capped to 75, there's not sense in marketing it,
promoting, etc...word a mouth within a few running clubs can top it
    out.

they simply gotta find a region to host the race...some locale where
there's some upward growth room...so the event can indeed grow and
prosper, become a tradition, etc. especially if it's got a big fun
factor built into it intensionally by design.

Just think...a single regional running club can easily fill up 25% of
the available slots on a whim. I've never even heard of a non-elite
race...a general open to the public outdoor race with a cap/limit of 75
people. and how you justify bothering going forward with that built in
    limitation is...something I don't quite understand...

IT IS NOT CAPPED AT 75, there are at least 150 people entered in both
events as of today. It would have been if they held it at it's original
location. That wasn't the intention of the race director it was imposed
by The NYS Dept. of Conservation/and or Pine Bush Commission a month
before the race was to take place. I don't know what they thought a
couple of hundred runners were going to do. Guys with cross bows and

Lance, if you actually sign up for a trail run within a couple hours of

Just guessing. looking at the description it's not that hard of a course,
but it will run somewhat slower than a road race, even with the same effort
level, so the long uphill and rougher terrain might make it run as if it
were 14 miles not 13.1; that was my point. More dramatically, the escarpment
trail is 18.6 miles and it runs about 25% longer than a marathon.

Not really. I sometimes look at past finishing times to try to ballpark my
time goal, but I've always been a mid-packer so I'm not concerned about
    who's going to win.

Yea, go for that one lance, I'm running that race. It's in the same park
(French Creek) that I ran the 30k double trouble on in May, maybe the same
course. It's easy to moderate difficulty, with constant hills, but not
mountains, so it runs pretty fast. From the general description given, the
Gorilla will run a bit faster than Dirty bird. The pretzel city sports race
series is great, and it's in an area (Reading) that's a hotbed of trail
running, so you'll get to see some good trail runners there if you go. A
good one to pick for a first trail run - almost all in the woods, mixed
    single-track and slightly wider trails.

It would be either be a fun experience or a frustrating one, whether you win
or lose. Some people love the challenge of trails, some feel held back
because in some sections they can't go as fast as they want or they fall
down. Hope to see you at Dirty Bird - Or will you wimp out 'cuz it means
    leaving the city limits 😉

parks (harriman) on a trail I've never done before.

What's the matter with having some fun? I have to give these people a
lot of credit, the core of this club are college students and recent
graduates. They've done a lot to promote trail and road running in the
area. I think the animal themes are meant to attract kids to running by
    the way.

It sounds like you've got a good club up there, you're lucky. So how is that
"indian-ladder" section of the long path in there? Sounds like some great
views in thacher park. Hope to make it up there to a race sometime.

if i'm healthy mid-way through november i'm going to enter a trail run
just to be able to be able to talk my [censored] to you guys and back it with
at least one crumb of experience. ok, ok...for now you can say i am
talking out of my ass and don't know what i am talking about. fair
enough. i'm hoping to be in running shape in about a month for a 15K
Trail Run. Something called the "Dirty Bird" in Reading, PA. $25 seems
a little steep to me for a country run in the woods...what's the deal
    with that?

300 runners also strikes as rather smallish however...I gotta get a
trail run under my belt so I don't have to hear DF whinning and calling
me a city boy wimp, etc. and good lord, don't let me be a top
finisher in my AG....oh my god, you trail guys will never hear the end
of it...hahahaha. I can see the headlines now, "City Body Road Runner
    Conquers Trails" 🙂

    Happy Friday Everyone....

    I'm 1 of 64 runners registered for a trail 50k in November.

Yep. That's the only reason I'm doing an ultra.

Could happen. So after that, which ultra are you doing?

    Ha!

    You can't win.

I know how this one goes.

    You've done zero ultras!
    You've done only 1 ultra!

At this point, the principal of induction applies.
