  1. Could happen. So after that, which ultra are you doing?
    Phil M.
    ---------------

well i'd love to select one but the are 3 small problems keeping me
    from Ultra'ing:

    1) natural erections are not a problem for me and last time i checked
    both testicles were still there.

2)not being testosterone deficient i still have to urge to competively
run as opposed to endurance run (to blow off time, run w/cheesecake,
    hawaiian pizze & coffee, etc.)

    3) i am not a white man and thus have no desire to invade, exploit, and
    trample on nature.

thank God I have these 3 problems.

..if it's a new course how do you know the fatigue factor connected
with the course? i looked at the site...they're encouraging people to
wear costumes,...and there's a prize category for it...no? they also
have a prize category for the person that finishes the race carrying
the most bananas. and the race is limited to 75 runners?
is this a race or a farce? give me a break...oh you trail guys are
    hardcore all the way...lol

do you trail guys ever give any consideration at all to the field of
    runners?

The course is new but it is run on the same trails as two races that
have been run for several years every Summer. This isn't The Escarpment
Trail but it's not easy. There is one long uphill which will be in the
middle of race and a smaller but decent uphill early in the race. No to
mention the downhills, I don't ant to think about them!

It sounds like a decent course, but I kind of didn't like the sound of 3
loops - 6mile, then 1 mile on grass, then 6 miles, so crossing the finish
    area twice before finishing.

They had to do what they could with limited time, having to se the
finish line before you're done is never good.

there isn't a 75 runner limit. The race was moved from it's original
location because NYS DEC decided to impose a 75 runner limit.
If you think these guys are wimps, FYI one of them finished 7th at the
Escarpment Trial this summer. Another ran 3:05 at the local Marathon on
Oct 9th. He then went to CT 2 weeks later and ran 3:00 on a more
difficult course. He'll be head south for the JFK 50 miler next month.
If you want to get an idea of the difficulty a friend of mine who won
    the women's 15k two years ago ran 7:32 pace. She's a 2:56 marathoner,
3:17 in Boston 2 years ago when it was 85F.

I think lance would be challenged if he went, as you've got some talent up
there. I'd be slow as usual! What pace are you going for Parker?

Hopefully under 2 hours, but I'm not sure. I've had some kind of bug
this week. I'm taking the next two days off. Hopefully I'll feel better
by Sunday. I haven't done any hard training since August either.

    Based on
my run yesterday, I haven't got the legs to run a good HM without more of a
taper, so I've gotta stick to my previous race schedule 11/13 5k, 11/27
dirty bird 15k trail. I'll settle for an easy trail run in one of my local
parks (harriman) on a trail I've never done before.

What's the matter with having some fun? I have to give these people a
lot of credit, the core of this club are college students and recent
graduates. They've done a lot to promote trail and road running in the
area. I think the animal themes are meant to attract kids to running by
    the way.

It sounds like you've got a good club up there, you're lucky. So how is that
"indian-ladder" section of the long path in there? Sounds like some great
views in thacher park. Hope to make it up there to a race sometime.

Beautiful views on that section, just have to pay attention to the
hazard signs that remind you it's a minimum 100 ft drop if you go over
    the edge!

Yep. That's the only reason I'm doing an ultra.

    Ha!

    You can't win.

I know how this one goes.

    You've done zero ultras!
    You've done only 1 ultra!

There's more. A 50k is not considered to be a "real" ultra among some
members of the ultra community. So until I've done a real ultra (50+
miles, rugged terrain, river crossings, duct-taped feet, blowing chunks
at the aid stations) I will not have achieved ultra runner status. ;-)

ok, now we're getting somewhere and this further reaffirms my notions
of the whole ultra endeavor. The Ultra could not be more American the
above statement is the history of America, "rugged individualism",
"exploring the frontier", and all the romantic notions of the birth of
the nation. In sum, today, the Ultra is the white's man modern
expression of Anglo expansion. Okay, fair enough.

But where did this originate? "Rugged Terrain"?, "Crossing
Rivers"?....as fast as possible, etc...ya know this stuff sounded
pretty familiar to me and now I know why I have no interest in running
a damn ultra. My people have been running Ultras since 1810....it was
called the "Underground Railroad" where many traveled by foot (and a
hell of a lot further than DK or PR).

That's right...I said it...and the more I think about it, the more
[censored] I am getting. In fairness, a lot of good white people made the
    underground railroad possible.

So once again, we see through the lens of history, the modern day white
man lives out his needs frontierism & expansion in a form of sport
called Ultra that that's basically a watered down version of what the
black man started in 1810, the underground railroad. As is always the
case, the white man steals from the black man and claims it as his own
no different than Rock-&-Roll. We started Rock & Roll, and we started
    Ultras too, deal with it.

  15. I probably would have done an ultra last year, but I had to get that
damn Boston thing out of the way.
    __

gone within me is any particular unique desire to get a "boston"
notched on my belt. nyc is so over-the-top i can completely understand
it lacking appeal for many a marathoner too.

the top of my spring thong list is big sur. since i may not be running
this nyc race next week i've been looking for a B plan and this Miami
Tropical Marathon is looking pretty darn good.

Ya know Disney is sold out at 29,000 runners. 3 weeks later on 1/29/06
is this Miami race and their anticipating 10,000 this year. However
this Miami Marathon has a few things going for it like filling the
spillage from turned away would-be Disney runners and most importantly,
this is the first year of their new alignment/sponsorship with the
world-wide king sponsor for Marathons, "ING".

That's a huge difference maker in forward race growth and ING is very
serious about their Marathons. Timing is great as I can see lots of
cold weather runners savoring the notion of flying to Miami for a flat
    & fast ING Marathon.

ING is the sponsor behind the Amsterdam, Brussels, New York City,
Ottawa, Taipei & Thailand Marathons and are the biggest player in the
    marathon busines.

I really think in a few years it will be bigger than Disney, WhiteRock,
even San Diego (races that time of the year)...directly because of
location, course, sponsor, and time of the year. It simply seems to
have everything going for it and I myself am seriously considering it.

Note the reviews that you read on marathonguide.com are all from
pre-infusion of ING money & alignment....I figure it can only get
better. Miami in late January sounds pretty good to me 🙂
