  1. Im after advice feedback that anyone may have on shin splints.
Ive taken up running on a regular basis although ive always been a runner.
Since pushing myself that little bit more I've come to have shin splints.
Ive stopped running the last 2 weeks and still have the soreness.

How can I overcome the pain and prevent it once it comes good.
I know the obvious preventative measures, ie run on grass and warm up,
    stretch before slogging ones self.

Those "obvious preventative measures" won't help much.

The most likely cause is "pushing" yourself "that little bit more".

Could you briefly describe your training program, both before and after
injury ? Include the number of miles run and pace you run at.

Also, I agree with Om -- shoes are an important factor. What sort of
shoes are you wearing (brand *and* model number), and why did you choose
    those shoes ?

    Cheers,

Besides the training technique and footwear - once the pain subsides, you
might want to do some exercises to strengthen your tibialis (the muscle on
the front of your shin). I seem to recall that muscular imbalance between
the gastroc and tibialis can be a contiributing factor.

Dear stupid, even though you posted this to the muscle-bound [censored]
group, instead of the intelligent runners group, I'll help you.
Rest is the only thing that helps a shin slint. But are you sure it's
a shin splint? A self diagnosis is usually wrong. Try new shoes, they
are almost always the cause, and bad shoes can mimic shin slpint
symptoms. NO NIKES, and go to a real running shop where they can
observe you running, and recommend the right shoe for you. You will
spend at least 70 to 90$ for a decent pair.

And it sometimes takes as much as 8 weeks to heal. Shin Splints is
used to cover a wide array of shin pain, however a true shin slint is
a stress fracture, and requires healing time just like any other
    broken bone.

I agree with the "shoe" suggestion.

Years ago, when I was running outside (I stick to the treadmill,
these days) I developed a mild case of shin splints. I changed my
shoes out for a pair of cross-trainers that gave me better support
and never experienced the problem again.

  8. Thanks for all the feedback ive received so far.
Ive always been a runner however short distance which I guess hasnt been a
problem as far as over exertion.
Ive recently joined an athletics club although my training hasnt been pushed
up too much as far as time and distance goes. Ive started doing interval
runs and running more regularly so therefore I suppose giving myself lest
    rest.
I use Nike Air Max shoes, purely because previously I had adidas and had
joint problems and a Doctor reccomended I purchase a shoe with maximum
cushioning. Compared to anything else Nike Air Max has seemed to served me
well. I also had a short bout with asics and still favoured the Nike shoes.
I also do roll my foot in my stride and I say that because the outer heel of
my shoe wears out first and is noticeable.

See your doctor, of course. Stop running.

That second one is pretty important because even if all the advice
here is right your body is telling you it needs time to heal. While
you are figuring all this out STOP RUNNING. Trying to run "through
the pain" is a surefire way to develop a lifelong nagging injury.

I hate to say this, but I learned the hard way to not take the advice of
a foot doctor when it comes to shoes. When I followed a podiatrists
advice, my foot problems got WORSE.

When I went totally against his advice and switched to mocassins for my
work shoes for about 6 months (they wore out after that, holes in the
soles), my foot problems went away. I now wear Earth Shoes at the
suggestion of one of the ER docs. He wears them too. ;-) Have had no
    foot problems since.

The podiatrist had this thing about wearing stiff soles so the foot did
not bend during walking. I was getting a calcium deposit, causing pain,
at the mid-foot to the outside where the tarsal bone from the little toe
met the metatarsal. He told me to never wear bare feet.

Well, I went on vacation for two weeks and hardly wore shoes at all, and
all of my foot pain cleared up. So much for THAT theory!

Mama nature knows best it seems...

Anyway, for suggestions on a good cross training shoe, ask here or ask a
doctor that specializes in sports issues, or a good coach.

    Cheers!

Another reason to consider not buying Nike products is that most of
their products are made in Pakistan using Child slave Labor. Socker
balls especially. This is just one reference, many more can be googled:

The interval training is the most likely cause. How often do you do this ?
What sort of workouts do you do ? Do you do your interval workouts with your
    running club ?

You should get more wear on the outside of the heel, and the inside of the
toe so this is normal. But the heel shouldn't break down before the rest
of the shoe. Maybe you're overstriding, which increases impact. How many
steps do you take per minute when you run ?

Also consider the QC issues, and most importantly the fact you'll pay

to nikes extensive advertising budget. Nikes are designer shoes, not
