Does anyone know of an inexpensive on-line source for sterling
flatware? The pattern I am looking for is made by International, if
that matters.

Did you check e-bay? I've found quite a few goodies I was missing on there.

No, I want new - and I don't trust ebayers. I have seen some things
sold as new that clearly were not. I may take a peek though - thanks!

Inexpensive Sterling seems an oxymoron to me, but I have bought additional
pieces of our pattern at Upscale Gallery.

How true! I'm glad we're downsizing and I don't have to worry about that
any more. Silver went to one daughter, china to the other.

I haven't figured out what I'm going to do yet. I'm an only child and end
of the line of our family, more or less. I have sets of china and crystal
from both grandmothers and my mother, as well as china and crystal I
bought for myself; "everyday" sterling from my maternal grandmother and my
mother's sterling. I haven't the heart to sell it and my cousins don't
seem to want it. Guess I'll just keep it and let someone else decide. :-)

There is no such thing as inexpensive sterling anything, 'specially not
brand new.
Why would anyone want such a dinosaur? Do you have a live-in maid who
is willing to spend hours tediously polishing... even housekeepers
nowadays don't do that. Today there is such gorgeous stainless steel
flatware, puts sterling to shame... and no one will steal your
stainless, but guaranteed, guests will pocket pieces of sterling.

Used in excellent condition is much prettier than brand-new because
much of it has great patina - only acquired by loving use through years
and years of dining.
Sheldon notwithstanding (you're wrong, Shel), you can find inexpensive
sterling - even brand-new - on Ebay. And even if you have some reason
to be wary, all you have to do is CAREFULLY read the descriptions and
pay close attention to the feedback.
I sold (not on Ebay) my early-choice sterling which didn't "fit" me
anymore and bought (on Ebay) a used set of 5-piece place settings for
12 (!!) for less than $400, and have been filling in serving pieces,
extra pieces, etc., ever since.
The reason it was inexpensive? It had a "D" monogram. Tough, right?
LOL. It's Gorham - it's beautiful - it goes perfectly with my china.
And Shel - I've never had a guest of any kind steal any of my sterling
(or anything else, for that matter) - New Yorkers must be a different
breed from us "backwards" midwesterners. ;-)

I have used E-Bay to pick up an odd piece or two in my sterling
pattern, and have had no problems whatever. As to guests walking off
with a piece of your sterling, I recall one day when I was a teacher
that I saw the high school principal pacing in his office with a
sterling teaspoon. He had found it in his jacket pocket, knew it
wasn't his wife's pattern, and was worried about whose it was. Well, I
asked him when he wore the jacket last, and it seems he was at a rather
lovely party. He had stuck the spoon in his pocket at the head of the
desserts table, didn't need it after all, forgot about it, and took it
home by mistake. The lady was delighted when he called -- in great
embarassment -- and stopped by the school the next morning to retrieve
her spoon while she dropped off a plate (paper!) of freshly made
cookies. I believe that most sterling that "walks off" does so either
in men's jacket pockets where there are buffet or dessert tables, or
stuck to the bottom of sticky plates that are stacked,(another reason
NEVER to stack plates!), or in pizza boxes.

Hmmmm. Never had anyone steal my sterling silver. But then again, I don't
let just *anyone* in my house! Mine was inherited, in a nice wooden chest.
I don't entertain so I gave it to my brother. Mom's sterling will come to
me (she said) so it was no big deal to give the other stuff to another
family member.

I recently bought a glass jewelry box ($8) that had an elaborate
etching "Karen Sue 1956"... well, I had to get it, even if my middle
name is Stephanie.
Monogram stuff can go really cheap. I bought an old 14k gold charm "A"
last night for $8 and $2 shipping. My maiden name begins with "A"...
nice addition to my bracelet.

LOVE that story! I found a fork in my purse a while back. I think it
must have fallen off the table at a restaurant. It was a restaurant
type fork.

I like it because I like it. If you use it daily it won't need
polishing and will develop a lovely patina. Besides, there are those of
us who love to polish it. Re thievery: Many years ago, a relative
came to my home (she was invited) with her boyfriend (he had not been
invited). Made me edgy. After he left, MIL said, "Count the silver!"
LOL!!

What, she should bring him cookies on her china after what happened to

Ebay is great! I have had nothing but good luck with it as far
as antiques and collectibles go. Several hundred transactions
over the years and not one bad.

Yes, I agree. I lend my silver (almost of it inherited, I asked for
no gifts when I got married) out to people in the neighborhood
who need certain pieces--nut spoons orice buckets and
tongs--when they are doing a large party. Twice someone
went home with some of my pieces and called around until
they found out who they belong to.
