First of all, never let your ego tell you how much to lift.

    Indeed... ;-)
    Less weight, better form.
No sloppy reps for this chika!

As far as lifting more weight goes, I prefer a healthy dose of patience
    and
    wave loading.

I try to toss a minimum of 5 more lbs. on the bar with each set,
but I limit that depending on how it feels.

You should have googled waved loading through mfw.

But anyway, wave loading is where you load a little more weight on the bar
every time you lift, until you can't lift it anymore. This might be spread
out over a few months or more. Then... you drop enough weight off so that
the exercise is easy and start all over again. The idea is that you'll have
a higher peak load than the last cycle.

    Oh, cool thanks!
It makes a lot of sense.

    URL??

The move is a deadlift move, but where the bar is pulled from knee
    height,
suspended on blocks or pins in a power rack.

    Oh! I see.

I always lift it from the floor... but there is a rack available.

What is the point of doing that?

Asking out of real curiosity! I'm not familiar with doing a partial like
that and the purpose behind it?

It's very useful in strengthening your lockout power. Also, It can really
toughen up your hands and possibly the rest of your upper body. Another
thing is that if you are lifting enough weight in the lockouts, you'll get
pschologically used to really heavy weights and then when you do regular
deads they'll seem a little lighter. YMMV

    Makes sense, thanks!

Once I get the weight up a bit more, I'll have to try that.

    Cheers!

    Nah!

All it meant is that I started out too wimpy on the deadlift and did not
push myself hard enough. :-) I was only doing a measly 95 lbs. Olympic
bar with 2 x 25 lb. plates. I added enough over 3 sets to bring it up to
    135 lbs.

    I'm stronger than I realized!

But, 10 years ago after 3 years of lifting, I could do 210. :-(
    That 10 year layoff sucked.

I decided to push myself MUCH harder today after last nights blood tests
    revealed a measly 50 CPK!

Last time I ran it it was 350.

I sometimes use that enzyme level to tell if I am working heavy enough,
but I don't run stuff more than once per month.

    Cheers!

Ok, I can't believe I'm actually posting this for the world to see, but---

I can only dead about 65 lbs right now <blush!> In my defense though, I
have had 2 major surgeries in the past 3 years, including a spinal fusion.
When I started, I bought one of those candy-ass Danskin bars with 12 lbs of
weight, and it like to killed me. That was 4 mos. ago, and while I AM
progressing, I gots a loooooonnnng way to go.

I confess that even at my best, I could never bench press more than 90
lbs. Right now I'm working with 65. :-P

Chest has always been my weakest part!

And lets not even talk about squats! I'm still back to using either the
Smith rack or the hack squat sled.

I can lift one heck of a lot more on the hack squats. Seems to be easier
    on my bad knees.

Deadlift just happens to be my strongest lift.

    THAT got scary!

Gawd, I bet! Surgeries aside, no major health problems here, I was just
running an internet business and sitting on my fat ass too much. Getting
weaker and tireder by the day, you know?

My cardiac workup 4 years ago was negtive with a stress test and cardiac
ultrasound, but I KNOW my resting heart rate is too high (90 bpm), and
any kind of effort would give me a pounding heartbeat. I was just way
out of shape cardio-wise which is why I'm really stressing it this time.
Running around at work has me at 110 to 120. It's not good.

I've upped it to 30 minutes on the bike now 5 days per week and just
upped it to level 5. From here on out, I'm going to go for time instead
then up the level only after I start doing 1 hour per day.

And yes, sitting on my fat ass in front of the computer was also one of
my greatest sins. ;-) Usenet is addicting! I've cut way back on posting
on the other groups I used to attend to more. Some of the regulars are

True, true-when I got my two 10's a while back, the guy behind me was
impressed that I slung both of them onto the counter at once-now THAT is
    sad.

Yeah. Once Ben goes home, I might try to get her to work out with me as

What you do is get a cycling computer for the bike. It will tell you how
    far
you rode as well as your total riding time. If you stop for a rest, the
computer also stops and picks up again when you start pedaling. You can
    then
work to ride for longer times, or farther distances, or even higher
    average
speeds. Even a computer costing $25 or less will tell you all of these
things. You can get an idea of how many calories burned from how long you
rode. And, the bonus is, when you get tired, you can coast!

    Pat in TX

You could also get a cheap heart rate monitor (look for them at the end of
the year, when the new models come in). They'll estimate the calories
burned (though I think the calculations are quite high). Also, I do not
like the fact that the cycling computers stop when I stop -- I don't know
the actual time I rode and also the speed is higher. In real terms, I'll
be riding at about 12 mph (say), including stops, but the cycling computer
will say 14 or 15 mph. It still takes me X quantity of time to ride, and
I'd rather know that. So, I have to have another device (my HR monitor)
to tell me the total elapsed time.

But the cycling computer is giving you the more accurate number as far as

I do get the total elapsed time---from my watch! I am a bit confused by
your saying "I don't know the actual time I rode" because that starting and
stopping does give you actual riding time. If you want total time you were
"out there" then just use your wristwatch.

Believe it or not, I prefer books to TV for cardio.
Takes more concentration so takes my mind more off of the peddling IMHO?

Oh, I'm sure, but the thing is, if I can cycle while watching Law and Order,
that will distract me too, since I love that show. And it's on almost every

I've heard of light weight training in nursing homes and even in 80 y/o
females, it'll cause an increase in bone density!
Weight lifting is really about the only thing that will _reverse_
    Osteoporosis AFAIK?

That's what I've heard too, and is another reason I started lifting. I have
a bone graft in my neck, and osteoarthritis further up, so strengthening
    those bones is a MUST.

    It's boring, but necessary.
Good conversation makes it go quickly too!
There is an older 'nam vet at my gym that sometims comes and talks at me
while I'm on the bike, and he is better than any book. ;-) 20 minutes
    went by like nothing today.

That sounds awesome, I love talking to older people-it's always fascinated
me. Unfortunately, I work out at home, so I don't get that opportunity.

    All in good time...
What is the cost of your local gym?
I'm fortunate. SMAC (San Marcos Athletic Club) has NO contracts, bank
drafts or initiation fees! You pay for what you use.

    I paid $44.00 for 3 months flat out. :-)

They charge $2.00 per day, or, $9.00 per week, or, $17.00 per month, or
as above, $44.00 for 3 months for women. Men run about 30% more as they
are harder on the equipement. <G> They also have 6 months and 1 years
memberships that save you even more...

I've thought about it and the biggest obstacle to trying to do an hour
is TIME! If I can get the guys to allow me to go to work at 10 pm
instead of 10:30, I can leave at 06:30 instead of 07:00, giving me that
extra 1/2 hour. We shall see!

Yeah, tell me about it! Even with not working, an hour a day is tough, and
now I need to add some yoga-my hams just aren't loosening up as much as I'd
like. Hope you can get your schedule adjusted so you can make it work!

Looks like they are going to grant my wish and put me on Mon. thru Fri.
Graveyard shifts and pull me off those ungodly weekends!!! Yay!
This way I'll be able to maintain a more regulated eating and medication
    schedule.

nights, I will be also when I go back to work.

It's fantastic. I get off at 07:00 and get to the gym around 07:30.
Hardly anyone there and the AC works better with fewer sweating bodies,
AND I don't have to wait for the equipment so things go faster! I sleep
    afternoons instead of mornings.

That sounds great! I wish I didn't have to get home right away, I'd

play as often as I used to! I used to play twice per week regularly. Now
I play maybe 3 or 4 times per month as Texas has upped the odds too much

Ironically, they did that to up the pot so that people would play more.
