want to do a steak medium. Is frying in pan 4-5 minutes per side at 160º
best... or shud I broil it instead?

in America you are not far from a backyard grill! Check your
neighbor's backyard...I bet he has one. Tell him you want to cook a
steak on his grill...he will let you!

Tell him... tell him I wanna rotisserie his wife... he will let me!

Bull doody... Only way my neighbors get to bring steak to cook on my
grill is they bring steak enough for me too, and with all the fixin's
including whatever they're drinking... and vice versa... is fit n' it's
fittin'. Don't want any of yoose stinkin' presumptuous schnorers in
    our neighborhood.

Not to mention, "check out your neighbor's backyard" is liable to get you
shot as a tresspasser or potential burgler. Be sure to do it in the dark,
    by flashlight 😉

Yeah, right, just go look around their yard and oh, by the way, I want to
use your grill. Uh huh. Wonder what planet this guy is living on?

    Even a neighbor?

The last two tenants next door both used my grill multiple times. We
even trundled it over to their yard once for a multi-grill party.

Then again, we're not in "America."

I don't know my neighbors except to say hello in passing. For all I know
they could be axe murderers. Okay, probably not, but still. I'm something
of a hermit and have had some rather bad experiences with neighbors who felt
knocking on my door at all hours was just fine. Sorry, it's not fine.

I'm glad (wherever you are) you enjoy BBQ's with your neighbors.

LOL How true. I have posted here before about my obnoxious and nervy niece.
When my wife and I were married here parents got a marquis tent and caterer
and held the reception in the backyard of their very nice home. They sold
that place a few years later and it changed hands twice more after that. When
the obnoxious and nervy niece got married she approached the new owners and
asked if she could have her wedding reception there. She didn't even know
    the people.

Surprisingly, they did not slam the door in her face. I just can't imagine a
situation where I would allow a stranger to use my house for a party where
there are going to be another 100 or more strangers walking through my
house. I can't imagine anyone, other than this niece, having the nerve to
    ask.

I remember your horror stories. She sounds like someone who needs a ton

That is even more bizarre than your niece asking them!

Unfortunately, our neighborhood association has outlawed grills as fire
hazards... you literally have to have the grill in the street (in the way of
traffic) in order to meet the fire code.

I wound up pan-frying the steak with a bit of Tiger Sauce and Tabasco® as
seasoning--- the sauces caramelized and provided a bit of blackening and the
steak turned out perfect with just a soupçon of pink on the inside.

I also caramelized thinly sliced yellow onion in extra-virgin -- adding
crushed black pepper at the beginning and adding thinly sliced garlic cloves
as the onion was almost ready to remove from the heat.

Next, sautéé some shiitake mushrooms in butter... while rolling some cherry
tomatoes around in the onion pan after removing the onion to get the skins
seared, then did the same with some red chili peppers, blackening on two
    sides.

Made for a nice presentation and an excellent meal!

Did the Communist ruling party give some statistics to back up their
decision? I cannot imagine living where there is a HOA.

I can top that story Edwin...my daughter's new home owner's

You can cook a steak to any level of doneness you prefer by either pan
frying it, broiling it, or barbecuing it. The trick is to cook the steak
until its firm to the touch, but not too firm. The amount of time to
cook a steak to medium depends on the thickness of the steak. Just try
and experiment with the cut of beef you prefer and you'll get the hang
    of it.

Yep, I worked with a woman whose neighborhood association would tell them
what colours were appropriate to paint their houses. I can't imagine. I
mean, okay, I don't want a purple house next door. But really, if you own
the property it's no ones business what shade of paint you buy!

We once painted our (old) house a color that we thought was identical
to the colors in the neighborhood (south Orange County - entire
subdivisions are the same hideously boring color) and were told to
repaint it to a precise shade in Brand X paint. Always figured the HOA
had someone with a cousin who owned the nearest paint store that sold
    it.

Years ago in a development we lived in, the HOA threatened us with legal
action if we didn't remove a weathervane from our house. (Weathervanes
were not addressed in HOA documents.) Although our community was fully
cabled for television, the documents did allow for antennas up to 10 times
the size of our weathervane. Our response to the HOA was that we would
gladly replace the weathervane with a TV antenna approximately the maximum
size allowed. Needless to say, the weathervane stayed.

I don't necessarily care for HOAs; clearly they go too far. But
after seeing some of the things that are going on around here, I can
    see why they exist.

Amen! Lived in a suburb once where someone had painted their house a
screaming bright pink, and they had a car to match, parked in the
driveway! Turned into a landmark... when giving directions to our house,
it was a case of... "turn right when you pass the pink house"... 🙂
