The pain in my upper back is so bad now that 135 hurts and it doesn't let up during the squat. So, I went to a new chiropractor today. He's Dr. Fred Clary who also set a few world records in the APF as a teenage (793 deadlift at 275 was one). Anywho, he tells me I have a rib overlapping another and a disk out of place. He asks me when my next meet is and I tell him I'm flying out early Friday. He asks me if I expect him to walk on water.
So, he says he's going to be pretty rough on me today. He wasn't kidding. I've never experiences so much pain for so long before. He kept putting pressure on the spot I get the pain from for what seemed like 10 minutes and he was pushing hard. Then he quickly placed his other hand on my spine and cracks my back in such a way I feel it throughout my back. He does the same thing in a little different spot and then wammo, my whole back explodes again. He cracked my back once more and then put my neck through it's paces, cracking it twice. The last time he yells, "there it is!" and says that's enough. Then tells me he wants to see me this afternoon.
I went back for more punishment this afternoon. He had my lay on my belly and put heat on my upper back and neck for about 10 minutes. He then came back and crunched my back and neck about 4 or 5 times within about 10 seconds and said, "you're done".
So now I feel like I've been in a car accident but I don't have any rib pain any more. Just some very sore muscles. I just hope I heal up enough by Saturday that pain won't be an issue. Oh, and, he told me to start doing high pulls. I guess that gives me an excuse to buy more bumpers:-)

On the contrary, the tissues on my upper back are sore as hell but everything feels like it's in place for the first time in a year and a half. I spent more than a dozen sessions with my last chiro and I could never say that. Plus, other powerlifters I know swear by him. But, you're right, he is strong as hell. So strong that I thought that spot he was putting pressure on was going to snap...I guess it did but upwards where it belongs.

Yo, fat boy, I am an expert on chiropractors, and this guy is a quack and a jerk. Saturday you will get creamed because this dork F'ed you up. I guarantee it. Find a qualified chiropractor, not a quackopractor. Good chiropractory does not hurt.

This sounds a bit like Mistress Krista's story in her rant of the month. I tend to avoid that sort of pain. My mother's a neuromuscular massage therapist and it hurts so bad every time she tries to "align" me that I decided I prefer being non-aligned. (There's a political joke in there somewhere.)
Why do you suppose chiro works? I'm considering doing some accupuncture to release the "chi" and get the healing flow going towards some tendonitis that just isn't healing some two years after it cropped up. It pisses me off that my friends says this works, because I can't spot chi and strongly suspect it's all whooey when they claim to unblock it.

Always a good thing...
Yes, yes it is! What he actually said was to stop doing those routines in PLUSA like the ones that having me do rows and do high pulls instead, which I thought was hilarious considering we usually say that here about the fitness rags. Anywho, he said I need to train for my body and my upper back needs high pulls!
What do I think? My last chiro was recommended to me by a training partner. I used him and never experienced one bit of pain during the treatments. But, he never really helped me either. When I went to the gym tonight and told Ron I went to Dr. Fred, he said that he went to him once and was nearly on the ceiling from the pain. But, he fixed his leg problem in one session.
I'll take 10 minutes of torture to put bones back in place that were seriously out of place any day. Besides, the follow up session this afternoon wasn't more than 10 seconds (and really not painful like the morning) if you don't count the 10 minutes of heat. Besides, the afternoon session was nothing when compared to unracking (and reracking...that's even more painful when the weight comes off) a barbell...something I do at least a half a dozen times a week.
Glad it's working for you. I just wish I understood WHY it works.

I'll have you know that I'm not geeky enough to be in the movie theater at midnight for the opening of Episode III.
Ignore the fact that I'm on usenet. I'm cool, I tell you, COOL!
(Okay, I confess, the only reasons I'm not at the movies right now is that a kid has a huge standardized test tomorrow, plus I'm worried losing that much sleep will hurt my triathlon training.)

I'm still speculating that everything is good to go now as I'm pretty sore but, I had one of those back rib thingies pushed down on top of another rib as well as a disk that was out of place. This was stuck there so he needed to move all of those things back to where God intended them to be. Plus, he needed to do this all at once because I have a meet this weekend. So, being the fellow powerlifter that he is, he obliged me by giving me the "emergency" treatment. He put everything back in place, the pain be damned...I've got a meet.

BTW, he insists he sees me as soon as I come back. I think he suspects what I suspect in that I'm probably going to dislocate those ribs again this weekend. Go heavy or go home. Hehe.

How about "go heavy AND go home." In one piece, preferably not in a body bag. Then it's all good.
(But maybe I'm ascribing to you my own triathlon goals, which mostly revolve around attempting to survive.)

Nah. I'll wait a week or two. I like Star Wars, but fell asleep in Episode 2. That was the crappiest of the Star Wars movies. It just didn't seem to have a plot. Or maybe it was that everything kind of blended together. Whatever...it sucked. -- -Larry

What do you think?

May the force be with you.
Sorry...just couldn't resist. 🙂
Hehe. Thanks!
🙂
Hope the new chiro helps John. And good luck at the meet Saturday. -- -Larry

Thanks, W!
Yo. :-)

We didn't even address my shoulder much except that I thought it was at about 90% right now. So basically, I'm handicapped in every single lift. But, I'm more worried about an earthquake causing me to hitch a deadlift than me doing major harm to my body by competing.

I think your friends would also adore the King's (or was it the Emperor's) new clothes as told by HCA!!
As Danny Kaye sang so wonderfully:
Look at the King, the King, the King, the King, the King, The King was in the altogether......

What about you: are you going to see it?
Delenn
Nah. I'll wait a week or two. I like Star Wars, but fell asleep in Episode 2. That was the crappiest of the Star Wars movies. It just didn't seem to have a plot. Or maybe it was that everything kind of blended together. Whatever...it sucked.
It really is a time for decisions, whether to queue to see the new film or sit at home in the study and watch the grass grow.
I think on my skimpy knowledge of the past Star War 'fillems' that the "grass" will win hands down!! ;o)
