"Coffee Shop" is the local slang for the legalized marijuana/hash bars
which, in fact, serve coffee. They are 'themed,' much in the way that
our bars might be: sports, reggae, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Jazz,
etc.

When my friend and I, along with his Dutch girlfriend, were last in
Holland, she gave us a /world/ of grief about wanting to visit the
coffee shops, calling it such a stereotypically American thing to do.
We convinced her to stop in for a few minutes . . . to translate all
the Dutch being spoken inside ;-)

. . . but, for the record, I was talking about espresso :-)

It's even the standard expression for it. It's not legal btw, but it's
"allowed" in most places. In my town it's illegal.

Ahhh.. I have a very fine Krups Espresso machine, that I feed Columbia
coffee beans from the best coffee importer in Holland. It has one
disadvantage, just like my taste was spoiled when I lived in France, which
causes me to avoid restaurants in Holland, the expresso machine spoiled my
coffee taste and I can't drink 99,9% of all coffee served in restaurants
and/or cafe's.

Actually, the original postings were about Holland, not Denmark, which are
two different places.

In Amsterdam a "coffee shop" sells dope (and coffee); if you just want
coffee, go to a cafe.

I was just wondering what we would say in stead of coffee shop...
In Holland we say: "let's have coffee somewhere". When you say "let's go to
a coffee shop" you'll be taken to a place where soft drugs are being sold.

This was the first episode of the Rough Guide to The Netherlands.

AOHell stopped newsgroups so I had to figure out a software(Thunderbird)
