  1. HIGHLIGHT OF A WEEK IN SCOTLAND

On Wednesday afternoon a companion and I caught the Gondola to Aonach
Mor, walked across to Aonach Beag where we camped near the summit
(over 4000 feet). At times overnight it was whiteout conditions, and
I was glad of the Trango 3.1 tent, my new Marmot Helium sleeping bag
    and a good sleeping mat.

Getting out the ice screws, ices axes and snow stakes used to hold the
tent in 50mph winds overnight was a nightmare, but fortunately the
    wind had dropped.

The snow was in condition and we had a good day summiting the Grey
    Corries.

The descent and walk out to Spean Bridge much in the dark with head
torches was not pleasant. The cab fare back to the Nevis Range car
    park was £12.

Other walks included: Sunday - West Highland Way from Kinlochleven to
Fort William, Monday - Beinn a Chaorainn and Beinn Teallach, Tuesday -
Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg Arete, Friday - an attempt at Sgurr
na Ba Glaise, Rois-Bheinn and An Stac (beaten back by high winds).

Sorry, that's cheating, the entire trip is invalid

    Funny you should say that!

A friend said that we wouldn't be able to tick Aonach Mor as a Munro
if we ascended by Gondola. However, they said Aonach Beag would be
valid as we'd've walked from a Munro summit to a Munro summit without
further aid. So after we pitched and had a cup of tea, we walked from
Aonach Beag to Aonach Mor and back as a night navigation exercise.
    Both are now ticked.

The Gondola rises from 100m to 650m, and 300m away the chair lift from
650m to 975m. A total rise of 875m. The ski lift ticket (one way) is
£8.75, so, the ascent costs exactly 1p/m. A bargain with a big pack.

What about doing the Cairnwell ascending to the top of the pass by
    road?

Its your conscience but FWIW I agree with Simon that it is cheating. As
you didn't do the first summit from the road the second summit is also
not a valid ascent nor is the gentle bimble back to the first any
justification for claiming an unassisted ascent of the first. Just think
how easy a Munro round would become for the rich who used a helicopter
to land on one Munro in a group and the whole group ticked by high level
ridge walking and a return to the helicopter without any of that
strenuous flog up from low level.

Roger Chapman so far this year 17 summits
    New - 11 (Marilyns 0, Sweats 1, Outlying Fells 10)

Difficult one, isn't it? The problem with the "you cheated by getting
the Gondola" attitude is that it leads one to belive that the only
"valid" ascent would be from sea level. After all, you can drive up to
the car park at Cairngorm which is almost the same height as the top
Gondla station at Aonach Mor, and the car park at Glen Shee is probably
    even higher!

I'll have to remember that... "Just off for a week's gentle bimble,
    darling - don't worry!"

  9. This is silly

YOU decide whether or not your ascent is "valid". There are no
    rules..

Roads, railways or cablecars.. you choose.
You may even want to do it extremis.. every ascent from sea level..
(That would be fun!) It really is personal choice..... After all we
dont cheat ourselves by not going all the way to the top!

This topic must be a laugh to alpinists...

If you want to take it to extremes then the only "valid" ascent is by
foot from Torlundy, as the ski access road didn't exist when Munro
    devised his Tables. :-)

Does that mean that those with a vehicle capable of driving an extra
mile or two up a rough track are also cheating? Or indeed that
accepting a lift up a remote glen in a friendly keeper's LandRover
    also invalidates an ascent?

I agree with Richard - the only rules are those one sets oneself.

Read the follow up poster again.

He signs off, "Simon (not at all jealous)".

This simple line indicates that he has feigned jealousy of the trip,
and to deal with his pretend jealousy pretends that the trip is
    invalid.

(If he really was jealous, he wouldn't have used the term.)

However, I do believe that Simon would very much like to do a similar
trip, and like Roger would enjoy a 'gentle bimble' between Aonach Mor
and Aonach Beag, and does not like the prospect of a 'strenuous flog
up' to and through the ski resort on foot.

Depends on the circumstances, some landrover tracks stretch right to a
summit. You have to draw line somewhere and for me at least ski lifts
are out as is high level off roading that takes the effort out of the
    ascent.

As I said previously its his conscience. He appears to accept that the
ski lift ascent shouldn't count so why should anything built on that
ascent count, particularly when it is only a couple of miles and a few
    hundred feet of ascent?

Quite right - the only "correct" ascent of Aonach Mor is to avoid all
that tedious ski paraphenalia by ascending the East ridge via Stob an
Cul Choire (or does this mark me out as a saddo Top-bagger?)

I wouldn't dream of doing it through the ski resort even if I were still
up to doing such an ascent.

I guess flying into Ladakh International Airport, at 12,000ft, would
invalidate any subsequent ascents, in your book.

Definitely Cheating, not only can you not have these as ticks, I propose you
should be fined 3 other ticks, produce your list and the group will decide
what hills on your "Done List" should be demoted to "Yet to do"
