Last Thursday night, I set out on my normal 7 mile loop around the neighborhood. The run starts out fairly level then around mile 2 there's about a mile long downhill section then another mile of flat then I turn around and start back. As I started up the hill, I noticed I wasn't huffing and puffing like I usually do. I actually felt like I wasn't pushing hard enough but my watch said I was well ahead of pace. By the time I hit the top of the hill, I could tell my heart was pounding but not in the "near death" sense that it usually does, but more manageable. I slowed slightly to recoup and then started down my street. It's 9 tenths of a mile long. After turning onto my street, I was running in the Twilight Zone. It felt like I was a little machine operator sitting up in my head controlling the running machine. I felt no pain or exhaustion like I normally do at that point in the run. I finished in a PR of 54:26. When I got to my driveway, I didn't want it to be over. Normally I pray I'll make it back at all. I had to convince my self to not turn around and do another loop. I've never felt anything quite like it. Hoping to repeat the performance, I set out to do a 5 mile run Friday night. It was not to be. Everything was an effort. I couldn't clear my head like the night before. Was this a fluke or will I ever achieve inner peace again?

Hi Mal,
I had a run last week that seemed to require no effort. I just cruised along for 7 miles, about 3 miles longer than my usual runs. No watch, no HRM - just run and enjoy running.
These type of wonder runs are rare, at least for me. Any tips from runners who have similar runs more frequently?
You're busting your hump for a brief endorfin release? Shrooms are a lot less work, the colors are more vivid, and the people around you are far more likeable than usual.

Sounds like everything came together for a great run.
It could be a few factors. Well rested, "taper" affect, gradual improvement kicking in, good weather.
Its a well-known phenomena called "runners high". It comes in a bunch of different varieties such as a feeling of effortlessness, feeling of being a superman, intense sensory vivification, second-wind, going into a trance, and others. Other kinds of endurance exercise this too. Some researchers give a "scientific explanation" such as increase in natural painkillers in the brain during exercise, but this is debatable. Just enjoy it.

Yeah, I think this is going to be a one in a million experience for me too. Dammit, I was hoping it was shades of things to come.
