OT: card reader?

Does the camera have a card you can take out? If so you can put it in a

In addition to the card reader to get the images of the mem card you
might want to try uninstalling the camera software and then reinstalling
(with the latest version from the Fuji website).

That may fix your problem. If it does not then there may be a problem
with your computer hardware or with other USB devices that are
conflicting with the camera. If you have any other USB devices unplug
them and try the camera again. Try the camera cable in a different USB
port (directly into the computer rather than through a hub). If that
fails try on another computer if you have access to one (friends or
work).

The 50i apparantly uses a Smartmedia card

A card reader is just a means of connecting the camera's memory card to
the computer directly, so that files can be transferred to or from the
card. It will use its own drivers, and not FinePix Viewer. Card
readers for Smartmedia are relatively easy to get hold of. However, it
looks like the cameras mp3 player expects tracks to be encoded with
Infobind, soit may not play mp3 tracks loaded via the card reader.

Have you added any new software to your computer recently? My guess is
that something you have added has intefered with the driver for your
Fuji picture cradle. I had a similar case, where the drivers for an
Iomega Zip drive stopped my Jessops card reader from working. You could
try removing recent additions one at a time until the camera cradle
works again.

Thanks Dominic. That was my first thought too, and my second thought
was drivers etc. Unfortunately none of those things have helped at
all.

The problem is weird, and has been getting worse. I've found vague
references to something similar in messages from other 50i users, but
nothing I've been able to track down to useful effect. I've spent ages
trying to sort it out, so I'm hoping the card reader will cure teh
symptom, if not the underlying problem. If it does, that's good enough
for me!

Others have shown you what they are but I thought I'd add that I bought mine
to speed up the downloads that were so slow direct from the camera. They are
now almost instant. Worth every penny.

It might be the Smartmedia card in the camera. They can and do fail. Can you
beg/borrow another one and try that?

Have you installed RealPlayer 10 recently? I had to remove this from my PC
to let the pics download from my camera (Minolta Dimage X20).
There is a whole host of issues with RP10 stopping any USB downloads
regardless of camera used.

I'd buy a 6/7/8/9-in-1 reader, myself, for maximum flexibility (they'll be a
little larger), and from a PC supplier. £6-10 should cover it.

My Dad and I both have Olympus digicams and PCs with XP and all the latest
service packs. He still has trouble with seeing his camera card in-camera,
necessitating reboots and all sorts. Mine just plugs and unplugs with no
fuss. I guess my camera plays more nicely on the USB port. It is slightly
slow, but manageable even transferring all 128Mb to disk. I don't see any
point in leaving the camera connected for longer than it takes to do this -
it runs down its internal batteries while connected, for example.

Bizarrely, "flash" memory is now cheaper than "real" memory.

ASDA Walmarts (if you have one close by) sell USB2 Sandisk Card Readers for
14.99. Now, I know they have them for Compact Flash cards, not sure of
other media, but I would bet other media readers are sold.

No, but I'm v. careful with RP, which can be a complete menace, as
