I'm a little embarrassed by my ignorance re: this whole subject, but
are you talking about how your respective cameras perform in a cradle,
rather than with a card reader? I hope so, anyway!

A card reader is just a means of connecting the camera's memory card to
the computer directly, so that files can be transferred to or from the
card. It will use its own drivers, and not FinePix Viewer. Card
readers for Smartmedia are relatively easy to get hold of. However, it
looks like the cameras mp3 player expects tracks to be encoded with
Infobind, soit may not play mp3 tracks loaded via the card reader.

Thanks Alan. The mp3 thing isn't an issue since I only ever use the
camera for photo's.

No: it's always been difficult, but seems to have grown worse.

After all my attempts to cure it with software and drivers failed, I
wondered whether there may simply be a bad connection between the

or via the Fuji software. At that stage a red light on the cradle

I bought mine from eBuyer. It's a very small USB device that
simply plugs in (it needs drivers but other than that it
simply plugs in) and is like having extra drives, one of which
takes whichever card your camera uses. Hang on....

Wow, many thanks indeed! I've got a few sound files on my webpage in
RP format, and I've never been able to find an alternative. I'll check
out the links you mention: if I can dump RP there'll be a ritual
burning! :-))

They can be found cheaper. I bought a 'Compact Flash only' reader from
Jessops (their brand name) for just under a tener some time ago. Probably
more competitive now.

I use a card reader by choice instead of the camera cords as it is a MUCH
faster way of transferring the pictures. You can also bypass the (usually
useless) camera software for sorting the pics....just create files that mean
something to you and save to those & they will open using your preferred
image editing software eg Photoshop or similar.
The card reader is small and portable and on Win XP does not even need
drivers so you can take it to an internet cafe or printshop, on hols!!

I have a Dazzle 6-in-1 reader. It can do: Compact Flash, Smart Media,
Secure Digital erm...... erm .... and three other formats!

It is USB (1.1, I think) but I hardly use it because I have an SD slot
in my laptop and I use a PCMCIA adapter for CF.

expensive - I remember being rather embarrassed because it set
my godfather back a fiver in Harrods!

The number of different card formats that one reader can accept and read.
The highest I found was 19, which was complete nonsense as it counted every
single variety of each card. A bit like saying that Ford sell 325 different
cars because you can buy a Focus 1.6, 1.8, 1.8LX, etc etc.

Cradles are a bit out-moded. My camera (with a supplied cable) plugs
straight into any USB port. Modern versions of Windows (Macs as well, no
doubt) see the card (still in the camera) as a removable drive and assign it
a new drive letter. When the camera is unplugged, that drive disappears. I
think a 6-in-1 card reader will appear as six removable drives. You treat
these like any other drives or partitions and simply drag and drop files
from the cards onto your hard drive, or vice versa. No special software
required.

Compact Flash ususally translates into three formats: CFI, CFII and CF
Micro Drives.

SD is invariably SD and MMC.

So SD, CF II and Mciro drive are probaly the three other formats.

I remember that he asked what I'd like for a present. To say
he was somewhat taken aback when I requested a pen is
something of an understatement. Especially when I told him
exactly which pen I wanted /and/ my preferred colour
(burgundy) :-)
