  1. I've been low carbing for the last year and a half, have lost 50 lbs,
am almost at goal, and feel great. However the pressure of Christmas time
is slowly taking its toll on me. Only my wife and I are low carbing in
either of our families, and it's hard to pass up the tempting treats at our
holiday parties. I know I'm not going to be able to pass up the jambalaya,
gumbo, etouffee, boudain and other carby dishes. Therefore I have declared
the rest of December a FREE MONTH!!! I'll still be good when I'm eating at
home, but at the parties all bets are off. I'll just buckle down and work
even harder once January rolls around. At least until the 27th anyhow, it's
my birthday, and is also going to be a free day 🙂 I'll have to post my new
stats as of Jan 1 when I weigh in.

Don't go to your girlfriend's family's parties? That should make for a
good relationship. The problem is that there are several parties in a
row. Sure, you can eat for one, but you can't eat in advance for 5-6
hours of parties. Addionally, many people are hurt if you don't eat what
    they brought.

Does your girlfriend support your low-carbing? Does her
family know you're low-carbing? If you're talking about
formal sit-down dinner parties, that's a little more
difficult, but not impossible. Eat meat or some salad and
push the rest of the food around on your plate. Informal
noshing parties or buffets are easy. No one notices if you
eat very little or nothing at all. If they do, just say you
already had some and you're full. And keep a glass of water
or diet something in your hand. You can't let anybody give
you a guilt trip just because you don't eat their food. Good
luck at your parties and have a good time!

I find that "recovering" from just a few days of heavy meals takes
almost a week. Two offf days at Thanksgiving and up 5 lbs.

Let us know the ups and downs.

I would be particularly interested in the rapidity with which weight
goes on ( fast glucogen and water build-up?) and the speed with which
you can get it off, and what you do to get it off.

My girlfriend does support it (doesn't follow it), but there are no, and I
mean NO, low carb options at these parties. (Not even meat that's not
in/wrapped in something else.) Thanks for the support, though.

Of course not, but it sounded like Bob was very reluctant to
give up his WOE for the holidays and I offered some
    suggestions. Simple as that.

You might want to read this article I put together about the challenges
that come up when you do a prolonged carb-up and then go back to low
carbing. If you understand the physiological processes that kick in, it
is easier to get through the couple days of difficulty that ensue.

    http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/offplan.htm

Many people who have been very successful low carbing stringently are
not prepared for how rotten they may feel when they go way off plan and
how hard it is to get back on, and, sadly, this accounts for the many
who lose as much as 100 lbs only to post, a year later, "I went off
plan, couldn't get back on, and ended up gaining it all back and more."

I personally believe that the only way to low carb successfully for a
very long time is to learn how to go on and off plan successfully while
you are in the weight loss phase of the diet. That's because it is
certain that eventually you WILL go seriously off plan, no matter how
successful you have been. Unless you know how to get back on plan after
a prolonged dietary excursion, you are likely to end up gaining it all
back. This isn't because of moral weakness, but because of specific
physiological changes most people don't understand. (That's why I wrote
up the web page on this problem.)

    Eat the food.

    Enjoy yourself.

The OP can enjoy himself and bring some nice low carb food with him.

I doubt that party hosts would object to him bringing, say, a
rotisserie chicken and some other meat or fish.

And you have time to make this, when? I really don't have time to make
anything. I'm lucky enough to have the time to get to the darn party.

Or, the OP can just eat whatever is there. Contrary to what
some zealots would have you believe, eating a few cookies, a
piece of cake, or a couple of potatoes will *not* kill you.

    Really, it won't.

Very good point. I've always found that I can go off for a couple days

"I'll restart tomorrow, what diff does another day make." And that's a

Like? It's very hard to buy something that's low carb. That's what's
