I have a question. WHY do people who ride bikes wear those goofy
clothes? (ok don't shoot).....I don't know anyone who wears that stuff
around here to ride and I do know people who ride bikes. What is the
purpose of those jerseys and lycra pants? Is it for comfort, or to
show you are a real cyclist? I never understood it. I really do not
see people in clothes like that except on TV. We seem to have a
costume for every sport imaginable. My niece has her kids in many
different activities and they all require a costume which I seem to
think is unnecessary. Did you ever see a little 4 year old taking
Karate wearing one of those karate suits? Tell me he could not jump
around in his sweats!! Or a 3 year old girl who needs 43 gymnastics
outfits to look cute while learning to tumble? Work out clothes are
good for just about everything in my opinion. Warm up suits are great
too. I think its all a money making thing. If you have the money to
spend on Bicycle clothes I guess its fine, and if you are willing to
take alot of [censored] from people who think you look like a jerk, I applaud

Years ago when I first started riding I felt the same way. Quickly, however,
as I got more interested in riding longer rides (50-120 miles), at higher
speeds with faster riders, in summer temperatures 90-105 degrees, I quickly
learned the advantages of the shorts and jerseys. They stay dry (at least
while you're moving) and have a cooling effect, don't flap all over in the
wind, and don't rub your body raw due to the thousands of pedal strokes you
make on long rides and climbs. On really hot days, it's amazing to see all
the dry white mineral deposits on riders black shorts as they sweat it out
on the ride...but the shorts are still dry. I didn't like the bright colors
at first but now I try to buy jerseys and jackets as bright as possible to
help motorists see me. They are work clothes. From riding thousands of miles
a year at high speeds I began to understand the 'work' and I began to
understand the clothes.

I recently posted this story in another thread.....There's a local club of
racers who were yelled at by some yokel in a truck who shouted some comment
about the cyclists clothes. They caught up to the guy at the next light and
one of the women tells the guy "you know, you're right...my clothes do look
funny. But I can go home and change them. That beer belly and double chin
you're wearing you're stuck with."

Except that's not true. But the yokel is pretty much stuck with being a

BTW, cycling shorts help prevent or lessen saddle sores.

I can't speak for everyone but I wear bright clothes in order to be
better seen by drivers. At least then the ones not trying to kill me
can avoid me. The others find me anyway.

He's right about the $100 jersey, but you probably would be more
comfortable is a pair of bicycle shorts. My wife bought some shortly
after we got our tandem (and started going on longer rides together)
and she now never rides without them. They look like regular shorts,
but they're MUCH more comfortable due primarily to the location of the
seams; and they're padded). I think they were like $50 or something,
which we though was pretty expensive, but were evidently well worth it.

Or you can just wear regular shorts and shirts (I do).
The important thing is to just keep riding.

For very short and slow rides, normal clothes are perfectly adequate.
In fact, I'm embarrassed to see people casually riding on the local
trails at 5 mph on comfort bikes wearing tight lycra. My wife rides her
bike wearing a skirt.

Hit the open road and go a hundred miles, though, and you'll pretty
quickly discover the virtues of cycling clothing. Form follows
function. Seamless padded shorts because seams in the wrong place with
constant up-down motion lead to painful sores. Elastic bands around the
bottom of jerseys, because shirts flapping in the wind flap flap
flapping on your back for hours on end is like a form of Chinese water
torture. Polyester fabric because it works well to wick moisture away
and keep you cool and dry AND protects you from blistering sunburns.
Cycling shoes because feet slipping from pedals at 100 rpm can be
painful and dangerous.

And "Euro Pro" team kit because Fabrizio says we must :-) Seriously, I
don't own any team-branded jerseys, but I do buy bright colors because
I believe in conspicuity.
