  1. I used to feel the same way about cycling clothes, but when I started
doing rides over ~40 miles, my butt got really, really sore. I finally
broke down and tried a pair of cheap cycling shorts (< $20). I felt
silly wearing them at first, but I was amazed at how much better I felt
during a long ride. If it weren't for that discovery, I don't think
I'd ever have ridden a century.

I usually wear a t-shirt for any rides less than ~90 minutes; but much
longer than that and I wear something that "wicks", i.e., a cycling
jersey (again, cheapo's). An added bonus is that I can carry snacks in
    the back pockets.

I guess it depends on a person's body type/shape -- perhaps some people
can ride for 4-5 hours without any padding and still feel comfortable,
    but I can't.

  2. Well this ignorant woman will keep riding but not with those clothes.
I raised three kids. All in sports of some kind...including dancing
    lessons & gymnastics. When a kid is a pre-schooler they don't need
fancy outfits to take lessons. You can dance, do gymnastics, and train
without expensive clothes. You can do anything you have the passion
for without expensive clothes. Not all children are from well to do
families. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth and I took tap
lessons without tap shoes until my mother could afford them. And guess
what...I actually learned to dance. My adult kids now snowboard, ski,
and skydive. My avid snowboarding son wants equipment and a new board
for Christmas. It's a nightmare going into the ski shop. I understand
he needs warmth and insulated gear to keep from freezing to death, but
until I ride 200 miles at a clip I will never understand the bicycle
clothes. If I can't ride a bike without paying 100.00 dollars for a
jersey something is wrong. How the heck do poor people ride bikes?
Those clothes are way too expensive. Only people with money to waste
buy that stuff. And only people with money spend thousands on bikes. So
I guess Cycling is for the elite. Not those who actually need a bike to
get places because they can't afford a car. If you like those jerseys
and spandex and you can afford it........Go for it. Its your choice. I
just gave my opinion. Ignorant as it was. ;-)

The really sad part of this is that attempts to educate you don't seem to
help your ignorance. So perhaps your issue isn't simply ignorance....there
    are worse things, you know.

I just scored a $100 Louis Garneau, medium weight, black fleece jersey

BTW, I don't own a $100 jersey. I do have several pairs of cycling shorts
and tights. I do have one heavy jacket for winter riding, and one cycling
coat for night riding. IMO, the shorts are most important if you want to
    ride a lot.

There are a lot of much cheaper jerseys you can get if you choose.

get places because they can't afford a car. If you like those jerseys
and spandex and you can afford it........Go for it.

Bike clothing *is* expensive and not necessary for many riders. If you
cycle hard enough to perspire a lot, you'll find wicking synthetics dry out
faster than natural fibers, but polyester is polyester, there's plenty of
inexpensive synthetic clothes that work fine. Cycling jackets are usually
only slightly modified $15 windbreakers sold for $90. Jerseys seem to
follow the rule (unlike magazines) the more logos, the more expensive. Any
zip-front or pullover synthetic will be as good or better. My wife has a
drawer full of expensive jerseys (given by a friend who outgrew them), but
she prefers generic $10 CoolMax zip-mock-turtlenecks or t-shirts, I prefer
    them myself.

The only thing you really need is a pair of gloves, but those don't have to
be bike-specific either, most of my winter ones aren't, my summer ones are
usually $10 specials. If you ride often enough and long enough, eventually
you'll probably spring for bike shorts. If chafing isn't a problem, you may
not. If modesty is an issue, bike shorts provide the same benefits worn
    under light shorts/pants.

Thanks to our hard working comrades overseas, bikes are cheaper than they
ever have been, and the technology is much better. Cycling is not for the
elite by necessity, although there are some who seem to want it that way. A
local group just declared their "official" winter jacket --- $220.

around here to ride and I do know people who ride bikes. What is the
purpose of those jerseys and lycra pants? Is it for comfort, or to
show you are a real cyclist? I never understood it. I really do not
see people in clothes like that except on TV. We seem to have a
costume for every sport imaginable. My niece has her kids in many

around in his sweats!! Or a 3 year old girl who needs 43 gymnastics
outfits to look cute while learning to tumble? Work out clothes are
good for just about everything in my opinion. Warm up suits are great
too. I think its all a money making thing. If you have the money to
spend on Bicycle clothes I guess its fine, and if you are willing to
take alot of [censored] from people who think you look like a jerk, I applaud
you. Really, what is the purpose of those clothes? It certainly is a
big business. The only thing worse is the golf outfits of the old men

Well Maggie, every time I think there might be some hope for you, I'm
proven wrong. You could do some research, instead of going on a rant,
    spouting nonsense.

Bicycle jerseys can be purchased for as little as $20, maybe even
    less, watch the sales.

If you actually do your MS ride, you will se a lot of bike specific
    clothing.

Plenty of people on this thread have already made an attempt to
explain, why we wear jerseys and lycra. Maybe you should of taken my
    advice, less posting more reading.

If you keep it up, you could become the female "little" Bill Baka.
Are you on some special meds, that you sometimes forget to take? That
would explain a lot, as you do seem to exhibit multiple personalities.

  14. This reply educated me the most. I drove home for lunch and looked at
all the people riding their bikes. They are all wearing normal clothes.
I think they would look absolutely ridiculous riding around town in
lycra and bicycle jerseys. The man down the street from me rides every
single day. Rain or shine...winter and summer. He is a 60's hippie who
believes in the bicycle for environmental reasons and also for
exercise. He commutes by bicycle. If I ever saw him in one of those
cycling outfits I would fall over laughing. We graduated high school
together and he was voted as our MOST INDIVIDUAL of all the students.
I can't even imagine him in lycra. I can't imagine him trying to look
like a Euro Pro. If I ever see him in spandex, I will believe he
crossed the line in his pot smoking.

The local thrift shop occasionally gets shorts and rarely, jerseys,
