As a kid and teen, bicycles were synonymous with bmx and therefore was not only childish, but a waste of money. I remember kids lusted over "alloy rims," a phrase spoken with reverence in the same hushed tones as a 4K diamond I suppose. I wasn't into jumping in the air with a tiny bike underneath just to squish some alloy rims, so I tried to ignore bikes.
I had to get some basic transportation in college however, and bought an inexpensive bicycle. Truth be told, it was a piece of junk. Everything creaked. Not a touch of grease anywhere. Hi ten steel. Bought from a shop with a lazy, bitter owner.
The bike flew. It was amazing and exhilarating. I didn't even know how to shift. Fortunately, I knew how to use the brakes.
I was hooked. By my 3rd bike purchase, I had finally figured out how to buy and size a bike properly.
I've been into riding, off and on road since then, with long layoffs of several years at a time.
But the dream remains: being self sufficient without a car, staying in shape, and being kind to the environment. The dream lives.
